Apple has withdrawn the latest beta test version of its HomePod software, 18.1 beta 2, following numerous reports of the devices becoming inoperable after the installation. The update, which Apple had released to developers, was causing issues with the HomePod mini, as users reported their devices crashing and failing to restore.

In the AppleInsider forums, a user by the name of Jeromec detailed the problem, stating, Two HomePod minis bricked after trying to install software 18.1 beta 5. Cannot restore them — the light goes white, then red, then vanishes instead of continuing with 3 audio beeps — they don’t even show up as USB devices in System Info on my Mac. Subsequently, Jeromec reported that he was able to use Apple Configurator to restore his HomePod mini pair to version 18.0 audioOS.

Apple’s decision to withdraw the update, HomePod Software Version 18.1, was not publicly announced. The withdrawal was initially noticed by MacRumors. This move comes just a week after Apple pulled iPadOS 18 updates from certain iPads, which were bricking devices with the M4 processor.

Despite the withdrawal of both updates, Apple has not provided any official comment on the issues affecting the HomePod mini or the larger HomePod. It remains unclear when the fixed updates will be released and whether the problem is exclusive to the HomePod mini or extends to the larger HomePod models.
