Kantipur Reporter Receives Hem-Sunil Risky Journalism Award

Kantipur Reporter has been honored with the Hem-Sunil Risky Journalism Award for their courageous reporting. The award was jointly presented to three Kantipur journalists who conducted on-site reporting in war-torn Israel and to the ANTV Kohalpur team who reported from the remote Wes Camp in the inaccessible Apa Himal region of Darchula.

The Hem-Sunil Risky Television Journalism Award-2081 was awarded on Monday to Kantipur journalists Homa Karki, videographer Shyam Shrestha, and photographer Prakash Chandr Timilsena, and ANTV Kohalpur team members Durga Bhattacharya, camera operator Bipin Shresthawas, and reporter Durga Bhattacharya. The prize money is one lakh rupees.

This award, established in memory of the late Hem Raj Bhandari and Sunil Singh, who lost their lives in a helicopter crash on October 7, 2063, is given annually on Asoj 7. The helicopter crash resulted in the death of 24 experts in the field of forest and environment, including Dr. Harka Gurung.

The award selection committee, headed by the Executive Chairman of the Press Council, Dr. Dharmendra Ghale, praised the Nepali journalists for their international-level war reporting. The team from Kantipur Media Group was sent to the frontlines of the Israel-Hamas war on the seventh day of the conflict. They conducted news gathering and broadcasting for Kantipur Daily, Kantipur Television, and Kathmandu Post from the border area (frontline) of Israel and Gaza.

On October 7, Hamas militants launched an attack, resulting in the death of 120 Israelis and foreign nationals, including 10 Nepali students. Among the victims were many women and children. ANTV Kohalpur’s Durga Bhattacharya and Bipin Shresthawas reported from the remote Wes Camp in the inaccessible Apa Himal region of Darchula, preparing reports on the Yarsagumba tip.

During the award ceremony, Minister of Information, Communication, and Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung mentioned that Nepal has not yet formulated a strategy for risky journalism. He highlighted Kantipur’s courage in reporting from Israel, saying that it is important to inform the Nepali community about the risks involved.
