Professional footballer Quincy Promes has announced that he will not attend his appeal case in the Netherlands, citing concerns over the possibility of arrest and subsequent detention. The appeal concerns charges of drug trafficking and stabbing his cousin.
In February, an Amsterdam court sentenced Promes to six years in prison for his role in the trafficking of over 1,350 kilos of cocaine via the port of Antwerp. Additionally, he was sentenced to 18 months in jail for assaulting his cousin in June of the previous year. Both cases are being considered together during the appeal process.
Promes’ lawyer, Robert Malewicz, stated during the introductory session at the appeals court in Amsterdam that while his client was initially willing to attend the appeal and respond to the allegations, the issuance of a detention order by the Amsterdam court poses a significant risk. This order would lead to his immediate imprisonment upon leaving Dubai, where he currently plays for United FC Dubai.
This is a dilemma because my client wants to continue his top-level sports career, and that is not compatible with a long period of detention, Malewicz explained. Promes recently signed a one-season contract with the second-tier UAE club.
An ongoing case against Promes in Dubai is also a factor in his decision not to attend the appeal. The Dutch Public Prosecution Service anticipates that case to be resolved before the end of the year, with the Advocate General suggesting a resolution in November.
The Netherlands has requested that Dubai extradite Promes in connection with the drug trafficking case, with the extradition procedure currently underway.
During the hearing, the defense team submitted several requests for investigation, including calling the cousin, sister, and a third eyewitness of the stabbing for witness statements. The lawyer representing fellow suspect Marylio V., one of Promes’ cousins who also received a six-year sentence for drug trafficking, requested that the appeals court separate the cases to avoid the circus surrounding Promes.
The court is expected to announce its decisions on October 3.
