Qualcomm Snapdragon AI PC Achieves 4K 120fps VVCPlayback with Alibaba’s Ali266 Decoder

Amsterdam, Netherlands– At the recent International Broadcasting Convention (IBC), Qualcomm showcased a video decoding solution powered by Alibaba’s self-developed Ali266 decoder, enabling theSnapdragon X Elite-powered Windows 11 AI PC to achieve smooth 4K 120fps VVC video playback for the first time.

This breakthrough is attributed to the Ali266 decoding solution, which allows the Snapdragon X Elite to decode ultra-low power, ultra-high definition, and high frame rate videos in real-time. The solution achieves smooth 4K120fps VVC video playback using only approximately 25% of the CPU.

According to experts, this industry-leading achievement stems from Ali266’s optimized master-slave thread architecture, specifically designed for theSnapdragon X Elite. This architecture enables three levels of parallel decoding: frame-level parallelism, CTU-level parallelism, and CU-level parallelism.

Ali266’s parallel decoding efficiency surpasses 90%, effectively leveraging the multi-core potential of the Snapdragon X Elite to accelerate decoding speed and minimize decoding latency.

Ali266 is Alibaba’s efficient encoding and decoding implementation solution for the latest international video standard H.266/VVC. It boasts comprehensive real-time high-definition and ultra-high-definition encoding and decoding capabilities.

On the encoding side, Ali266 supports 8K ultra-high-definition video encoding, offering over 50% bandwidth savings compared to the previous generation H.265/HEVC standard, benefiting video-on-demand, broadcasting, and live streaming services.

On the decoding side, Ali266 features a complete, self-developed decoder architecture, utilizinga range of engineering techniques such as multi-core parallelism and assembly optimization to enhance decoding speed and reduce CPU power consumption.

Furthermore, Ali266 seamlessly integrates with various platforms including Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, and Web, demonstrating exceptional performance on both x86 and ARM architectures.

Marta Karczewicz, Vice President of Technology at Qualcomm, stated, Ali266 is one of the best practices for the new generation of video coding standards, significantly lowering the threshold for ultra-high-definition video and delivering a richer, more immersive audio-visual experience for users of Snapdragon X Elite AI PCs.
