Chinese Chess Masters Banned for Life in Match-Fixing Scandal

Chengdu,China – The Chinese Chess Association (CCA) has announced the lifetime bans of twoprominent players, Wang Tianyi and Wang Yuefei, for their involvement in match-fixing. The decision comes after a lengthy investigation into the recording gate incident,which surfaced in April 2023 and garnered significant public attention.

The investigation, conducted jointly by the CCA and relevant authorities, revealed that Wang Tianyiand Wang Yuefei engaged in systematic match-fixing activities, including buying and selling matches. Match-fixingand manipulation are a grave threat to the integrity of our sport, said a spokesperson for the CCA. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship and fair play. These actions will not be tolerated.

The CCA’s decision to impose lifetime bans on Wang Tianyi and Wang Yuefei reflects the seriousness of theoffenses and the organization’s determination to eradicate match-fixing from the sport. Both players have been stripped of all their titles, including the prestigious Grandmaster designation. They are also prohibited from participating in any chess events organized or sanctioned by the CCA or its affiliated organizations.

The CCA’s statement further emphasized its commitment to fosteringa clean and ethical environment within the Chinese chess community. The organization pledged to conduct comprehensive investigations into any future reports of match-fixing or other forms of misconduct.
