Title: Apple Suffers Temporary Market Share Dip as Xiaomi Surges Ahead
By Malcolm Owen
Date: September 18, 2024
In a surprising turn of events, Apple found itself in an unusual position in the smartphone market landscape during August, slipping to the third-largest brand temporarily. The temporary setback, however, is attributed to the strong resurgence of Xiaomi, which surpassed Apple in market share for the month.
As Apple prepares to unveil the iPhone 16, the Chinese tech giant Xiaomi temporarily took the second-place spot globally in smartphone sales. This is not the first time Xiaomi has outperformed Apple; the Chinese vendor achieved a similar feat in August 2021.
According to a research note from Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi’s sales remained flat on a monthly basis, but this was enough to surpass Apple’s seasonal decline, propelling the brand to third place. It is worth noting that Xiaomi’s success is partly attributed to promotions-led growth in Latin America, as well as aggressive growth in successive quarters.
Despite this temporary setback, Apple’s sales performance remains robust. The research note highlights that Apple’s seasonal sales are a significant factor, with August being its weakest month in a given calendar year. The anticipation for new iPhone models traditionally introduced in September often leads to a decrease in sales as consumers await the latest releases.
Counterpoint Research’s report into U.S. smartphone sales revealed a 4% year-on-year shrink in August, leading to a 49% share for Apple. However, Apple’s year-end performance is expected to be strong, with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max being the top-selling devices worldwide in the second quarter of 2024.
Analysts are confident that Apple will quickly regain its position as the second-largest smartphone brand, potentially even regaining the top spot, thanks to the anticipated success of the iPhone 16.
In conclusion, while Apple experienced a temporary dip in market share during August, the company’s strong sales performance, especially with its latest iPhone models, suggests that it will bounce back swiftly and continue to compete fiercely with Samsung for the top spot in the global smartphone market.
