China to Conduct 1% Population Sample Survey in 2025
BEIJING, Sept. 18, 2024– China will conduct a nationwide 1% population sample survey in 2025, as mandated by the National Population Census Regulations, according to a notice issued bythe General Office of the State Council.
The survey, conducted every five years between population censuses, aims to gather crucial data on China’s population dynamicsand socio-economic characteristics. This information is vital for policymakers to understand demographic trends, formulate social and economic policies, and allocate resources effectively.
The survey will be conducted on a household basis, covering all residents of sampled households within China.Approximately 5 million households and 14 million individuals will be included in the survey, representing 1% of the country’s total population.
The sampling methodology will employ a multi-stage, stratified, and probability-proportionalapproach to ensure representativeness and accuracy. This method involves dividing the population into strata based on specific characteristics, such as geographic location, urban-rural divide, and socioeconomic status. Then, households are randomly selected from each stratum, ensuring that the sample reflects the overall population distribution.
The survey will gather information on basic demographiccharacteristics, including:
- Personal details: Name, citizen ID number, gender, age, ethnicity, education level, occupation, industry, migration patterns, marital status, fertility, mortality, and housing conditions.
The survey will also incorporate new indicators to reflect the evolving needs of China’s population development and policy priorities. These indicators will focus on aspects such as:
- Population quality: Health status, income levels, employment opportunities, and access to education and healthcare.
- Demographic changes: Aging population, urbanization, and internal migration patterns.
The standard time point for the 2025 survey is 00:00on November 1, 2025. Government-appointed investigators will visit sampled households to collect data. To minimize disruptions, residents can also opt for self-reporting through a mobile app, allowing them to submit their information online using a QR code.
The 1% population sample survey is a crucial tool for understanding China’s evolving population landscape. The data collected will provide valuable insights into the country’s demographic trends, socioeconomic conditions, and the impact of various policies on the population. This information will be instrumental in shaping future policy decisions and ensuring sustainable development in China.
