Shanghai, September 14, 2024 – The Wenzhou 18 Young and Middle-Aged Calligraphers Invited Exhibition was officially opened at the Zhejiang Art Museum on September 13, showcasing the artistic talents of 18 Wenzhou-based calligraphers, each contributing 54 pieces of their calligraphy works. The exhibition has drawn considerable attention from both the local and national levels.
The exhibited calligraphy works, ranging from traditional scrolls and handscrolls to albums, reflect the diverse styles and contemporary aesthetics of grass calligraphy. The participating artists, aged between 45 and 60, have won numerous awards and recognition in national exhibitions, including the Lanting Award, and six of them are members of the Art Committee of the Chinese Calligraphers Association.

Renowned calligraphers such as Fang Jiekan, Ma Gongyu, Xie Laiming, Zhang Guang, Zheng Manqing, Ma Mengrong, Wang Rongnian, and Xia Chengtao were active in the Wenzhou calligraphy scene during that time. Subsequent generations, including Xiao Yunchun and Lin Jiandan, have continued to contribute to the field.
Wenzhou calligraphy has always respected tradition, emphasizing the study of both classical and comprehensive cultural knowledge. The exhibited works demonstrate the pure style and traditional aesthetics of Wenzhou calligraphy, with a focus on elegance and simplicity.
The exhibition features prominent Wenzhou calligraphers such as Chi Changqing, Chen Zhongkang, Pan Jiaqin, Huang Shouyao, Wang Dahuo, Dai Jiamei, Lin Feng, Zhang Lianan, Ni Yong, Qiu Chaojian, Qian Yun, Wang Ke, Chen Mingzhi, Chen Xianfeng, Qing Sanbin, Zhou Jinghe, Zhang Haixiao, and Xu Qiang.
Chinese Calligraphers Association Vice President and Xi Lin Printmaking Society Deputy Director General Chen Zhenlian attended the opening ceremony and emphasized the significance of the exhibition. He highlighted the Wenzhou calligraphy scene’s unique blend of tradition and modernity, noting that many of the exhibited artists have pursued further studies abroad.
Wenzhou has a profound cultural heritage, and the city’s calligraphers have achieved remarkable success in the field of grass calligraphy. The exhibition has received widespread acclaim and has sparked discussions on the development of Wenzhou’s calligraphy industry.
The exhibition is organized by the Wenzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism, co-organized by the Wenzhou Art Research Institute (Wenzhou Art Museum) and the Wenzhou Calligraphers Association, and supported by the Zhejiang Art Museum. Experts and scholars from universities, literary and art associations, and calligraphy associations across the province participated in the exhibition’s symposium, discussing the High-Quality Development Strategy for Wenzhou Calligraphy.
The exhibition, which runs until September 26, serves as a platform for showcasing the talent and creativity of Wenzhou’s young and middle-aged calligraphers, and is poised to elevate the city’s cultural profile and contribute to the ongoing development of Chinese calligraphy.
