In a spectacular display of cultural fusion and artistic prowess, the Chengdu Symphony Orchestra wrapped up its Moonlit Flowers, Mid-Autumn Night special event, a dramatic symphony concert that captured the essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The event, held in the spirit of the traditional Chinese poetry, opera art, and symphonic music, drew a large crowd of music enthusiasts and citizens, who were captivated by the lively atmosphere.

The concert was conducted by the young conductor Hu Xingyu, who brought together three distinguished artists: Beijing Opera master Liu Lu, Sichuan Opera master Wang Yumei, and soprano singer Zhang Yi. The performance commenced with the profound and emotionally rich language of The People’s Festival composed by the renowned composer Dimitri Shostakovich. Hu Xingyu’s precise conducting and the orchestra’s seamless collaboration allowed the audience to resonate with the music’s praise of the common human pursuit of freedom, equality, and justice.

The program continued with Ascend to Xiling, Share the Moon, an adaptation by Ao Xiang that draws inspiration from traditional Chinese poetry, immersing the audience in the romantic ambiance of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The evening showcased the perfect blend of traditional opera and modern music with Wang Yumei’s Sichuan Opera aria from Infernal Sea and Spring River over the Moonlit Night, arranged by Li Wenping. The Beijing Opera performance by Liu Lu, especially memorable, demonstrated the charm of Peking Opera with her exquisite skills in Lily Song and Island of Ice and Wheel.

The latter part of the concert featured soprano Zhang Yi, who, in collaboration with the orchestra, presented classic opera selections like I Wish to Live in a Beautiful Dream and Moon Song, her voice resembling a clear spring under the moonlight, captivating the audience with its purity and moving melodies. The symphony orchestra and Zhang Yi’s singing intertwined to depict a beautiful scene of a family reunion under the Mid-Autumn moon.

The concert reached its climax with Liu Tianhua’s The Good Night and Chengdu, which led the audience to stand and applaud, expressing their heartfelt respect for the artists’ splendid performance. Prior to the concert, the Chengdu Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with The Cover News, offered two free tickets to five lucky readers, who brought their families to enjoy the performance. One of the winners, Guo女士, expressed that the concert made her Mid-Autumn Festival complete despite her staying in Chengdu alone due to personal reasons.

The event was a resounding success, not only for the artists and the audience but also for the fusion of traditional Chinese culture with contemporary music, which is a testament to the vibrant cultural scene in Chengdu and its commitment to preserving and promoting Chinese heritage. The concert is a reminder that the Mid-Autumn Festival is not just a time for family gatherings and moon gazing but also a time for celebrating the arts and culture that bind us all together.

The Cover News, a leading media platform in China, played a significant role in promoting this cultural event, providing a platform for both traditional and modern Chinese music to reach a wider audience. The news outlet’s partnership with the Chengdu Symphony Orchestra exemplifies the power of media in fostering cultural understanding and appreciation.

As the concert concluded, the audience left with a profound sense of fulfillment and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of Chinese culture. The Chengdu Symphony Orchestra’s Moonlit Flowers, Mid-Autumn Night concert will undoubtedly be remembered as a memorable cultural event that contributed to the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2024.
