Beijing, September 12, 2024 – The National Health Commission of China announced today that the country is set to establish a comprehensive chronic disease prevention and treatment system to bring tangible health benefits to the public.

According to a report from China Central Television, officials from the National Health Commission stated that China will integrate the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes into the overall deployment of the Healthy China action plan. This will create a comprehensive chronic disease prevention and treatment system with a focus on multi-disease prevention and management.

National Health Commission Vice Minister Yu Xuejun revealed that as of 2023, China has established 485 national chronic disease prevention and control demonstration areas, with a county-level coverage rate of 17%. Moreover, China has been gradually building a full-process management service model covering prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, further promoting the early prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Currently, the premature mortality rate from major chronic diseases in China has decreased from 18.5% in 2015 to 15.0% in 2023.

To further improve public health, the National Health Commission will expand the scale and capacity of high-quality medical resources and actively guide and support the downward allocation of medical resources to grassroots and remote areas. In addition, the Commission will vigorously develop internet hospitals, with the number of internet hospitals in China reaching 3,340, providing over 100 million internet medical consultations annually.

The establishment of the comprehensive chronic disease prevention and treatment system is a significant step towards improving public health in China. Chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes, have become a major threat to public health in the country. By integrating the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases into the Healthy China action plan, China aims to reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the public and improve their quality of life.

The comprehensive chronic disease prevention and treatment system will involve multiple departments, including the National Health Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and the Ministry of Finance. The system will focus on the following key areas:

  1. Strengthening the prevention and control of chronic diseases at the community level
  2. Improving the quality of medical services for chronic diseases
  3. Enhancing the prevention and treatment capabilities of grassroots medical institutions
  4. Promoting the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases
  5. Raising public awareness of chronic diseases and promoting healthy lifestyles

With the implementation of the comprehensive chronic disease prevention and treatment system, China aims to achieve the following goals:

  1. Reduce the incidence and mortality rate of chronic diseases
  2. Improve the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases
  3. Reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the healthcare system
  4. Promote the sustainable development of the healthcare industry

The establishment of the comprehensive chronic disease prevention and treatment system in China is a positive step towards improving public health and addressing the challenges posed by chronic diseases. By implementing this system, China will be better equipped to tackle the growing burden of chronic diseases and provide better health benefits to its citizens.
