In a groundbreaking move to enhance the quality of student life, China has introduced the country’s first local standard for school nap equipment, marking a significant step towards ensuring students can enjoy a comfortable and safe nap during their lunch break.

Background

The standard, known as the Regulation for the Equipping of Primary and Secondary School Nap Facilities (hereinafter referred to as Regulation), was officially implemented on September 12, 2024. This is the first of its kind at the prefectural level, setting a precedent for the development of school nap facilities across the nation.

Key Aspects of the Regulation

The Regulation focuses on the safety, environmental protection, and comfort of various nap equipment components such as nap mats, sleeping bags, desks and chairs, and foldable cabinet beds. It provides standardized requirements for these elements, aiming to create a conducive environment for students to rest during their lunch break.

Implementation in Guangdong Province

One of the first schools to implement the Regulation is the Sun Yat-sen University Shenzhen Affiliated School in Guangming District, Shenzhen. The school has equipped its classrooms with long rows of storage cabinets. After lunch, students can easily convert their classrooms into nap rooms by pulling out the beds hidden in the cabinets and using the bedding and eye masks stored in the drawers.

Another example is the Longgang School of Shenzhen Senior High School, where the desks and chairs can be transformed into lying chairs in seconds. By cleverly utilizing the space between the front and back seats, the school has designed the front desks to form a headrest with the back desks, while the last row of chairs have been raised to allow independent use.

Technical Requirements and Safety Standards

The Regulation sets specific technical requirements for the nap equipment, covering aspects such as the limit of harmful substances, specifications, and appearance quality. This comprehensive standardization aims to prevent unsafe products from entering schools and improve the overall quality of the nap environment.

Encouraging Tailored Solutions

In addition to the technical requirements, the Regulation encourages schools to develop customized solutions based on their specific needs. This approach allows schools to select nap equipment that promotes the healthy growth of students.

Achievements and Future Plans

According to reports, in the first quarter of 2024, 50 schools have already achieved their goals in implementing the Regulation. This year, Shenzhen plans to promote the implementation of comfortable lying nap conditions for all in-school nap students in 200 primary and secondary schools at the compulsory education stage, including branch schools.

Conclusion

The implementation of the Regulation for the Equipping of Primary and Secondary School Nap Facilities marks a significant milestone in China’s efforts to improve the overall quality of education and student well-being. By setting a precedent for the development and use of school nap facilities, the Regulation is expected to create a more comfortable and restful environment for students during their lunch breaks, ultimately contributing to their academic success and overall health.
