SEOUL, South Korea – Tencent Games, a leading global gaming company, has expressed its intention to deepen its collaboration with the Korean gaming market, emphasizing the importance of the region as a key partner. Yong-yi Zhu, the Vice President of Level Infinite, Tencent’s international gaming business brand, made these remarks during an interview with Yonhap News Agency on September 3rd at the Pangyo Second Techno Valley in Gyeonggi Province.
Zhu highlighted the significance of Korea as a hub for several of Tencent’s key partners, including KRAFTON (previously known as NCSoft) and Shift Up. He emphasized that Tencent plans to further strengthen its ties with Korean game developers in the future.
“Korea is a crucial market for us, with partners like KRAFTON and Shift Up already established here,” Zhu said. “We aim to deepen our collaboration with other Korean game developers.”
During the interview, Zhu repeatedly emphasized the importance of the Korean gaming market, noting that Tencent will also invest in Korean game development companies with similar potential, helping them achieve cultural localization in various regions.
Zhu also discussed his recent experience sharing session with several senior executives from Tencent, where they shared their insights into entering the global gaming market. The goal of the session was to identify potential partner game development companies and have a positive impact on the Korean gaming industry in the long run.
“We are very focused on companies like From Software from Japan or Larian Studios from Belgium, which have created their own game rules, or companies like Riot Games and Supercell, which have developed live-service game IPs that have resonated with audiences worldwide,” Zhu said.
Tencent Games became a board member of the Korean Gaming Industry Association in 2022 and sponsored the production of the “Game Literacy Education Guide” in August this year.
The emphasis on long-term content provision and user engagement is a key focus for Tencent Games. Zhu highlighted the need for game developers to consider how to provide content over the long term, especially from the perspective of game design, as users quickly consume content.
The move to deepen ties with the Korean gaming industry reflects Tencent’s broader strategy to expand its global presence and tap into the region’s vibrant gaming ecosystem. With its vast resources and expertise, Tencent aims to support Korean developers in achieving international success while fostering a mutually beneficial partnership.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, with a growing emphasis on live-service games and continuous content updates, Tencent Games’ focus on collaboration and investment in Korean game development is a strategic move to ensure its continued growth and success in the global market.
The news of Tencent Games’ expanded collaboration with the Korean gaming market is expected to have a positive impact on the industry, as it could lead to new opportunities for Korean developers and a stronger presence for Tencent in the region.
In conclusion, Tencent Games’ commitment to deepening its collaboration with the Korean gaming market is a testament to the company’s dedication to fostering international partnerships and driving the growth of the gaming industry worldwide. As the industry continues to evolve, such collaborations will play a crucial role in shaping the future of gaming.
