Shanghai, September 8, 2024 – A recent report released by the China Academy of Science and Technology for Development Strategies has highlighted the significant advancement in China’s regional innovation levels. The report, titled China Regional Innovation Evaluation Report 2024, was presented at the 2024 Pujiang Innovation Forum, showcasing the country’s commitment to fostering a robust and diverse regional innovation ecosystem.
According to the report, the comprehensive innovation level index of China reached 78.43 points in 2024, a 1.30-point increase from the previous year. This upward trend is attributed to the substantial increase in both the input and output of scientific and technological activities, as well as the continuous enhancement of the level of scientific and technological promotion in economic and social development.
The report evaluates the regional innovation levels across the country’s 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) based on five major aspects: innovation environment, technological activity investment, technological activity output, industrialization of high-tech industries, and the promotion of economic and social development. It uses 12 secondary indicators and 44 tertiary indicators to provide a comprehensive analysis of the development trends in regional innovation.
Key findings from the report indicate that Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Tianjin, and Zhejiang are leading the nation in terms of comprehensive innovation levels. The report credits the sustained growth of these regions to the continuous enhancement of their innovation centers and highland areas, which are playing a crucial role in fostering regional collaborative innovation and development.
Dr. Xu Zhaohui, Director of the Institute of Technical Forecasting and Statistical Analysis at the China Academy of Science and Technology for Development Strategies, highlighted the advantages of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in fostering innovation. Notably, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has been implementing the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Coordinated Development Strategy for ten years, resulting in continuous efforts towards driving innovation-driven development. The region has witnessed a total of 49,000 investments from Beijing enterprises into enterprises in Tianjin and Hebei, with a total investment amounting to 2.3 trillion yuan.
In the Yangtze River Delta region, the construction of the Yangtze River Delta Innovation Community has continued to accelerate, with the region’s share in 13 indicators, such as the number of invention patents, new product sales revenue, and high-tech industry business revenue, exceeding 30% of the national total.
Guangdong province, with the Pearl River Delta as its main battlefield, has maintained its leading position in terms of technological activity investment and the promotion of economic and social development indices.
The 2024 Pujiang Innovation Forum, co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Shanghai Municipal Government, aims to promote the construction of an open innovation environment. The event runs from September 7 to 10 and focuses on the theme Shared Innovation, Shaping the Future: Building an Open Innovation Environment for Science and Technology.
This report not only reflects China’s commitment to fostering innovation but also demonstrates the country’s capability to leverage its regional strengths to drive national development. As China continues to invest in its technological capabilities, the future looks promising for the nation’s regional innovation levels and its journey towards becoming a global technological powerhouse.
