China Steps Up Non-Fossil Energy Development, Aims for New Power System
Shenzhen, China – China is accelerating its transition to a low-carbonenergy future, with a strong focus on developing non-fossil energy sources and building a new power system, according to a statement from the National Development and Reform Commission(NDRC).
The announcement came during the 2024 Energy Green Development Conference held in Shenzhen on September 7th. Zhang Shixin,Vice Secretary-General of the NDRC, emphasized the importance of green and low-carbon development in the current energy landscape.
Green and low-carbon development has become the main theme of the energy development era, Zhang said in hisspeech. The NDRC will earnestly implement the decisions and deployments of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, effectively fulfill the ‘dual carbon’ coordination responsibilities, strengthen the clean and efficient utilization of fossil energy, vigorously develop non-fossil energy, accelerate the construction of a new power system, deepen energy-saving and carbon reduction efficiency, deepen international cooperation on energy green development, promote the green and low-carbon transformation of energy, support the construction of a beautiful China, and make positive contributions to global energy transformation and sustainable development.
The NDRC’s statement highlights a number of key initiatives:
- Strengthening clean and efficient utilization of fossil energy: This involves optimizing existing fossil fuel infrastructure and promoting technologies that reduce emissions during extraction and combustion.
- Vigorously developing non-fossil energy: This includes expanding renewable energy sources like solar, wind,hydro, and nuclear power, as well as exploring new technologies like hydrogen energy.
- Accelerating the construction of a new power system: This involves creating a more flexible and resilient grid that can accommodate the increasing share of renewable energy, while also integrating advanced technologies like smart grids and energy storage.
- Deepening energy-saving and carbon reduction efficiency: This includes promoting energy efficiency standards, encouraging the adoption of energy-saving technologies, and implementing policies to reduce energy consumption across various sectors.
- Deepening international cooperation on energy green development: This involves sharing best practices, collaborating on research and development, and promoting global cooperationon climate change mitigation.
China’s commitment to developing non-fossil energy sources is driven by a number of factors. The country faces significant environmental challenges, including air pollution and climate change.
