Seoul, September 6, 2024 – The South Korean Ministry of National Defense announced on Thursday that it is deploying an important regional anti-drone integrated system in real combat to counter the threat posed by North Korean drones and other similar threats.

The integrated system, which consists of drone detection radars, identification, pursuit equipment, and electronic jamming devices, is called an integrated system due to its comprehensive capabilities in detecting, identifying, and striking drones. The South Korean military plans to prioritize the deployment of more than 20 systems to units under the command of the Capital Defense Command and other units responsible for the defense of important areas.

In December 2022, five North Korean drones crossed the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), some of which even entered the airspace above Seoul. Although the South Korean military sent helicopters and fighter jets to pursue the North Korean drones, they were unable to strike due to reasons such as ammunition dropping or causing damage.

Following this incident, the South Korean military established a basic strategic plan to promote the important regional anti-drone integrated system project in April last year. To this end, the South Korean military allocated a budget of 292 billion South Korean won (approximately 1.6 billion yuan) and signed an agreement with defense contractor Hanwha Systems in December last year, planning to complete the deployment of the system before next year.

The anti-drone integrated system is designed to detect, identify, and strike drones effectively. It is expected to play a crucial role in protecting South Korea’s important areas from drone threats.

The South Korean military’s deployment of the anti-drone integrated system comes amid growing concerns about the threat posed by North Korean drones. In recent years, North Korea has frequently used drones for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes, and there have been reports that the North Korean military has been developing armed drones capable of carrying out attacks.

The South Korean military’s efforts to counter the drone threat are part of a broader strategy to enhance its capabilities in dealing with North Korea. The South Korean military has been investing heavily in developing advanced technologies and equipment to counter the growing threat from North Korea, including the deployment of missile defense systems and the development of cyber capabilities.

The deployment of the anti-drone integrated system is also a sign of the South Korean military’s commitment to protecting its citizens and ensuring the security of the country. As North Korea continues to develop its military capabilities, the South Korean military will likely face increasingly complex and sophisticated threats. The deployment of the anti-drone integrated system is an important step in preparing for these challenges.

In conclusion, the South Korean military’s deployment of the anti-drone integrated system is a significant development in the country’s efforts to counter the threat posed by North Korean drones. The system is expected to play a crucial role in protecting South Korea’s important areas and ensuring the security of its citizens. As the threat from North Korea continues to grow, the South Korean military will likely continue to invest in advanced technologies and equipment to counter these challenges.
