SEOUL, South Korea – South Korean President尹锡悦 met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in a significant summit held at the presidential palace in Seoul on September 6. The meeting focused on enhancing trilateral cooperation between South Korea, the United States, and Japan to address regional security threats, particularly those posed by North Korea and the close interactions between North Korea and Russia.

Enhanced Regional Security Collaboration

The summit marked the 12th meeting between the leaders since the resumption of inter-Korean summit diplomacy last March and the third meeting this year. During the discussions, both leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong response to North Korea’s provocations and the need to prevent the North from further provocations supported by Russian involvement. They agreed to continue and develop the spirit of the Davos agreement.

President尹锡悦 highlighted the importance of maintaining the established direction of cooperation between South Korea and Japan, as well as with the United States. Prime Minister Kishida reaffirmed Japan’s support for South Korea’s August 15 Unification New Strategy.

Historical Issues and Bilateral Relations

The meeting also addressed historical issues between South Korea and Japan. Prime Minister Kishida expressed his understanding of the suffering experienced by many people during the Japanese occupation and emphasized Japan’s commitment to maintaining the importance of the bilateral relationship. President尹锡悦 expressed his willingness to work with Japan to move towards a brighter future for their relationship.

Bilateral Cooperation and Agreements

The summit resulted in substantial achievements for bilateral cooperation. The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Protection of Overseas Citizens, aimed at simplifying entry and exit procedures for their citizens. Japan also provided relevant materials on the Fukushima Maru sinking incident to South Korea.

Regional and International Cooperation

The leaders also discussed regional and international cooperation, including proposals for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. They expressed their commitment to working together to address regional security concerns and promote peace and stability in the region.
