Hainan Lowers Typhoon Warning Level as “Moke” Weakens
Haikou, Hainan Province, September 7, 2024 – The Hainan Provincial Government has lowered the typhoon warning level to Level 2 at 8:00 AM today, following the weakening of Typhoon “Moke.” The Hainan Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Committee subsequently downgraded the flood and typhoon emergency response from Level 1 to Level 2 at 8:30 AM.
As of 7:00 AM, the center of “Moke,” a super typhoon, was located approximately 155 kilometers east-southeast of Hạ Long City in Quảng Ninh Province, Vietnam, withmaximum sustained winds of 16 levels (52 meters per second, or about 187 kilometers per hour).
“Moke” is expected to move westward at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour and make landfall in the coastal areas from Fangchenggang, Guangxi to northern Vietnam (at typhoon or strong typhoon level, 13-14 levels, 40-45 meters per second) later this afternoon. It is then predicted to rapidly weaken.
Due to the influence of “Moke,” thewestern half of Hainan Island is still experiencing strong winds and heavy rain. The cumulative rainfall in Liming, Danzhou, Baisha, Changjiang, Dongfang, Qiongzhong, Wuzhishan, Bao’ting, Ledong, and Sanya is expected to reach 40-80 millimeters, with local areas seeing up to 120 millimeters. The remaining cities and counties will experience 20-40 millimeters of rainfall, with local areas seeing up to 60 millimeters. Strong winds are still present in the northern Beibu Gulf and the western waters of Hainan Island, with rotating windsnear the center of “Moke” reaching 14-16 levels.
The Hainan Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Committee has notified all cities and counties, as well as relevant units, to continue their efforts in preventing and responding to the typhoon and in post-disaster recovery work in accordance with the Hainan Provincial Flood Control, Typhoon Prevention, and Drought Emergency Plan and its accompanying manuals.
