Beijing, September 6, 2024 – The China Transportation Ministry has released its latest urban rail transit operation data for August 2024, revealing a 0.96 billion person increase in passenger volume year-on-year. This marks a significant growth in China’s public transportation sector, reflecting the nation’s ongoing commitment to improving its transportation infrastructure.
According to the data, as of August 2024, a total of 311 urban rail transit lines were operating across 54 cities in 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government, as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. These lines covered a total distance of 10,363.5 kilometers and operated 3.49 million train trips, resulting in a total passenger volume of 2.81 billion rides and an entry volume of 1.68 billion.
The passenger volume in August showed a decrease of 0.65 billion rides compared to the previous month, a drop of 2.3%. However, when compared to the same month last year, the passenger volume increased by 0.96 billion rides, representing a growth of 3.5%. This indicates that despite the slight decline in month-on-month passenger volume, the overall trend is still upward.
The average passenger intensity of the total operating mileage in August was 0.894 million people per kilometer per day, a decrease of 2.5% from the previous month and a decrease of 2.2% from the same month last year. This suggests that while passenger volume is growing, the efficiency of the urban rail transit system is also improving.
The data also revealed that the 271 high-capacity lines, including metro, light rail, and regional rapid rail, accounted for the majority of the passenger volume. These lines covered a total distance of 9,666.1 kilometers and transported 2.76 billion passengers, with an entry volume of 164 million. The 7 medium-capacity lines, such as monorails and maglev trains, covered a distance of 202.5 kilometers and transported 34.02 million passengers, with an entry volume of 2.447 million. The 33 low-capacity lines, including trolleybuses and automated guided transit, covered a distance of 494.9 kilometers and transported 10.77 million passengers, with an entry volume of 1.021 million.
Additionally, the report noted that in August, 24 kilometers of new operating mileage were added, along with one new operational section, which is part of the under-construction Foshan Metro Line 3.
This latest report highlights the rapid development of China’s urban rail transit system, which has become an essential part of the country’s public transportation network. The increasing passenger volume and improving efficiency of the system demonstrate the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to promote sustainable and efficient transportation solutions in urban areas.
As China continues to expand its urban rail transit network, the nation’s public transportation sector is expected to grow further, offering more people access to convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly travel options. This will contribute to reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and enhancing the overall quality of life for Chinese citizens.
