The Sichuan Province is set to host the second edition of its Sichuan Opera Festival, a grand event featuring 41 performances and a variety of activities. The festival, which is scheduled to take place from September to November in Chengdu, aims to showcase the charm of this traditional Chinese art form.

The festival, jointly organized by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and other relevant organizations, is designed to promote the creative transformation and innovative development of Bashu culture, an integral part of the rich tapestry of Chinese traditional culture.

The opening performance, The Peony Fairy, will be presented by the Sichuan Provincial Opera Troupe on September 14. Directed by Zhang Yan, a famous Sichuan opera performer, the play tells the story of a fairy’s love for a mortal, embodying the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty in modern society.

The festival will also feature a range of other performances, including Burning Incense Record, Dreaming Back to Dongpo, Great World, The Dust Settles, Repayment Record, and Chinese Princess Dulan朵. These plays will be performed at various venues, including the Sichuan Grand Theater, Chengdu City Music Hall, and the Sichuan Provincial Opera Troupe Theater.

In addition to the performances, the festival will also host a variety of activities, including a youth Sichuan opera performer competition, a primary and middle school student opera inheritance performance, and an exhibition of rare Sichuan opera art archives. These events are aimed at promoting the spread of Sichuan opera culture from various perspectives.

The Sichuan Opera Festival also aims to provide a platform for young Sichuan opera performers to showcase their talents. It is expected to foster a new generation of Sichuan opera stars, thus ensuring the continued growth and development of the art form.

Chen Zhilin, the president of the Sichuan Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the director of the Sichuan Provincial Opera Troupe, expressed his delight at the increasing popularity of Sichuan opera among young people. He noted that more and more young people are visiting theaters to experience and learn about Sichuan opera culture.

The festival also marks a significant milestone in the protection and inheritance of Sichuan opera. The Sichuan and Chongqing municipal governments have collaboratively implemented laws to protect and promote the art form. This is the first time that such a law has been enacted in the cultural sector in China.

The Sichuan Opera Festival is expected to draw a large audience and boost the popularity of Sichuan opera, both domestically and internationally. It is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of China and a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its traditional arts.
