The meteorological authorities have issued an urgent warning as the super typhoon Mogaki approaches southern China. With its center附近最大风力从16级增强到17级, Mogaki has the potential to become one of the strongest landfalling typhoons in China’s history.
According to the China Meteorological Administration, Mogaki has further intensified overnight, with its maximum wind speed reaching 17 levels on the Beaufort scale. However, its movement speed remains slow, advancing at approximately 8 kilometers per hour, which is slower than an elderly man riding a bicycle.
The slow movement of Mogaki has rapidly exhausted the energy from the warm waters of the South China Sea beneath it. Since early on September 5, the typhoon’s eye wall has begun to weaken and deteriorate, with the outer rain bands quickly encircling and forming an outer eye wall in an attempt to replace the inner one. This structural adjustment is a common occurrence in intense typhoons and is known as eye wall replacement.
During the eye wall replacement process, typhoons often lose their appearance and strength significantly. Mogaki is no exception. By noon on September 5, the typhoon appeared皱皱巴巴 on satellite images, and its eye had become irregular. At this moment, the Hong Kong Observatory sent an aircraft into the core of Mogaki, where it measured astonishing data: a pressure of 931.5 hPa and a wind speed of 10 levels within 16 kilometers of the typhoon center. This indicates that although Mogaki is in the weakening phase of the eye wall replacement, its central pressure is still between 915 hPa and 925 hPa, making it an unyielding super typhoon.
However, as the subtropical high-pressure system strengthens, Mogaki has begun to accelerate, increasing its speed from approximately 8 kilometers per hour to 17 kilometers per hour. It has left the area where it exhausted its energy and arrived in the warm waters of the western South China Sea. Due to this, Mogaki’s inner eye wall has once again received sufficient energy supply, rapidly regaining its strength and merging with the contracting outer eye wall, completing a non-typical eye wall replacement.
After 7 pm on September 5, Mogaki’s typhoon eye became clearer, and the core convection became stronger, indicating that it has begun a new round of intensification.
The Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Bureau has issued a red-level alert for typhoon warnings, urging people in the affected areas to take precautions and ensure their safety. The authorities have also advised residents in the coastal areas of Hainan and Guangdong to prepare for the impact of the typhoon.
Typhoon Mogaki serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by extreme weather events and the importance of disaster preparedness and response. As this super typhoon approaches, the Chinese government and its people are mobilizing to minimize the impact and protect lives and property.
