Prosecutor Demands Nursing Home Care for Man, 91, Accusedof Stabbing Wife to Death: A News Story
Amsterdam, Netherlands– A 91-year-old man, Jan van B., accused of fatally stabbing his 84-year-old wife and setting their homeon fire, will not face criminal charges due to his early-stage dementia. Instead, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) has requested that he be placed ina secure nursing home.
The incident occurred on January 19th in the Van Speijkstraat neighborhood of Amsterdam-West. Van B. allegedly stabbed his wife 16 times, leading to her death a day later in thehospital. He then set fire to their home.
While the OM believes Van B. is guilty of the crimes, they argue that his dementia renders him incapable of being held accountable. He never consciously chose for this, the prosecutorstated.
Specialists have diagnosed Van B. with delusions and a loss of grip on reality due to his dementia. This led him to become increasingly suspicious of his wife, believing she was unfaithful. His actions are believed to have been fueled by rage and a loss of emotional control.
Van B. provided conflictingaccounts of the events, claiming the fire was caused by a short circuit and that his wife’s injuries were inflicted by broken glass. However, investigations have ruled out these possibilities.
The OM emphasizes the need for Van B. to be placed in a secure environment with 24-hour care and medication. Theyare currently searching for a suitable nursing home, a process that could take another month and a half due to limited availability.
The victim’s two children expressed their grief and fear, stating they had previously voiced concerns about their parents’ safety as their father’s physical and mental health deteriorated. They described their parents asloving and caring individuals, and they continue to mourn their mother’s loss.
The next hearing is scheduled for December 2nd, where the court will determine if a suitable nursing home has been found for Van B.
