Sam’s Club Faces Renewed Quality Concerns After Foreign Object Found in Mooncake

SHANGHAI, CHINA – September 5, 2024 – Sam’s Club, the membership-only warehouse club operated by Walmart, is facing renewed scrutiny over product quality after a customer in Changzhou, JiangsuProvince, found a tooth in a fresh meat mooncake purchased from the store.

The incident, which was reported by the official account of Nanchang Broadcastingand Television Station’s Information Channel, Xiaozheng Video, has sparked widespread concern among consumers. The video shows the customer, who has chosen to remain anonymous, displaying the mooncake, which is packaged in a simple plastic box with theSam’s logo and a production date of August 28, 2024. The manufacturer, Suzhou Songshang Food Co., Ltd., is listed on the packaging.

This is not the first timeSam’s Club has been embroiled in food safety controversies. In August, a customer found a bullet-shaped object in a roasted chicken purchased from the Sam’s Club store in Shenzhen. Another customer reported finding a live insect in an unopened package of colostrum milk tablets purchased from Sam’s Club’s officialflagship store on JD.com.

These incidents have led to growing concerns about the quality control measures implemented by Sam’s Club, particularly as the company has positioned itself as a premium shopping destination for the middle class and wealthy in China. The repeated occurrences of foreign objects in food products could potentially damage the brand’s reputation and erode consumer trust.

While Sam’s Club has acknowledged the recent incidents and stated that management is handling the situation, the company has not yet provided a detailed explanation or plan to address the underlying issues. The repeated occurrences of food safety concerns raise questions about the effectiveness of Sam’s Club’squality control processes and its commitment to ensuring the safety of its products.

Despite the controversies, Sam’s Club continues to expand its presence in China, with a total of 47 stores across the country, primarily located in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuhan. This expansion comes at a time when Walmart is facing challenges in its traditional retail operations in China, with nearly 60 stores closing in the past two years.

The recent incidents highlight the importance of stringent quality control measures and transparent communication for retailers operating in China. Consumers are increasingly demanding higher standards of food safety andtransparency, and any lapses in these areas can have significant consequences for businesses.

As Sam’s Club continues to grow its presence in China, it will need to address the concerns raised by these recent incidents and demonstrate its commitment to providing safe and high-quality products to its customers. Failure to do so could leadto further erosion of consumer trust and ultimately hinder the company’s long-term success in the Chinese market.
