SEOUL, September 5, 2024 – South Korea’s Kepco (Korea Electric Power Corporation) announced on September 5 that the Unit 4 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially commenced commercial operations.

The UAE Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority granted an operating license for Unit 4 in November last year. In December, the unit completed fuel loading, and after approximately eight months of trial operation, it was formally put into commercial service.

Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the first nuclear power plant in the UAE, is being constructed by a consortium led by Kepco. The plant consists of four APR-1400 advanced pressurized water reactors, with each reactor’s generating capacity reaching 1,400 megawatts.

With the commercial operation of Unit 4, the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is expected to provide over 40 terawatt-hours (TWh) of clean electricity annually, equivalent to 25% of the UAE’s electricity demand.

Kepco expressed that the entry of the four nuclear reactors at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant into commercial operation demonstrates South Korea’s nuclear construction capabilities and the UAE’s management and operational capabilities. The company stated that it will further strengthen energy cooperation in the future based on this collaboration.

The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is a significant milestone for both South Korea and the UAE in the field of nuclear energy. The successful construction and operation of the plant reflect the advanced technology and expertise of the Korean nuclear industry, as well as the UAE’s commitment to diversifying its energy sources and reducing carbon emissions.

The completion of Unit 4 is a testament to the strong partnership between South Korea and the UAE. The cooperation in the nuclear power sector is expected to deepen the relationship between the two countries and promote further collaboration in various other fields, including technology, trade, and investment.

The UAE has been actively seeking to diversify its energy sources to ensure energy security and reduce its dependence on oil and gas. The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant plays a crucial role in achieving this goal, as it provides a stable and clean source of electricity.

Kepco’s role in the construction and operation of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant has been instrumental in the project’s success. The company has demonstrated its expertise in the design, construction, and operation of nuclear power plants, which has helped to build trust and confidence in the project.

As the world continues to face the challenges of climate change and the need for sustainable energy sources, the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant serves as a shining example of international cooperation and technological advancement. The project’s success is a testament to the potential of nuclear energy in meeting the world’s growing energy needs while minimizing environmental impact.

In conclusion, the commercial operation of Unit 4 at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant marks a significant achievement for both South Korea and the UAE. The project showcases the strengths of the Korean nuclear industry and the UAE’s commitment to diversifying its energy sources. As the plant continues to generate clean electricity, it will contribute to the global effort to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
