Introduction

China’s national park system has made remarkable progress, with a significant increase in the number of flagship species and improved ecosystem diversity and stability. The recent success of the national park system was highlighted during a press conference held by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration (SFLA) on September 5th.

National Park Development

The SFLA’s Protection and Management Department Director, Zhang Liming, presented the achievements of the national park system during the press conference. He noted that the national park system has gone through a pilot exploration phase, formal establishment, and comprehensive development, resulting in significant achievements and progress.

Growth of Flagship Species

One of the key achievements highlighted by Zhang was the continuous growth of flagship species within the national parks. For instance, the population of Tibetan antelopes has increased to over 70,000, with the number of snow leopards recovering to over 1,200. The number of Siberian tigers and leopards has also increased from 27 and 42 individuals during the pilot phase to approximately 70 and 80 individuals, respectively. The population of the Hainan gibbon has grown from less than 10 individuals in the 1970s to 42 individuals in seven groups today.

Improved Ecosystem Diversity and Stability

The national parks have also contributed to the improvement of ecosystem diversity, stability, and sustainability. The headwaters of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang rivers have been protected in their entirety, with over 70% of the natural habitat of the giant panda preserved. Moreover, 13 giant panda population areas have been connected through ecological corridors.

Enhancing Livelihoods

The national parks have also had a positive impact on the livelihoods of local communities. In recent years, nearly 50,000 residents have been employed as ecological guardians, earning an average annual income of 10,000 to 20,000 yuan. A range of民生 projects, including wildlife damage insurance, ecological relocation, and the construction of entry communities and model villages, have been implemented to improve the living conditions of local residents.

Support for Ecological Protection and High-Quality Development

The Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park has implemented policies to support ecological protection and high-quality development in three counties (cities). The park has employed over 8,100 ecological guardians, significantly enhancing the sense of gain and happiness among local residents.

Conclusion

The success of China’s national park system in protecting flagship species, improving ecosystem diversity and stability, and enhancing the livelihoods of local communities is a testament to the country’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. As the national park system continues to expand and improve, it will play a crucial role in preserving China’s rich natural heritage and promoting ecological civilization.
