The Hague, 5 September 2024
A criminal report has been filed against a vlogger following an incident of homophobia that occurred on a tram in The Hague. The incident, which garnered significant national attention, involved the vlogger filming a man with nail polish on his toes and making homophobic comments. A fellow passenger intervened on behalf of the victim, and the vlogger later posted the video online.
According to a police spokesperson, the report was received on Monday afternoon, following the initial incident. Various witnesses also reported the crime after the event gained national attention. The spokesperson was unable to specify who sent the report due to privacy regulations.
The police are treating the case with seriousness, and no arrests have been made as of yet. The AD newspaper reported that the vlogger has been causing unrest in The Hague, often threatening and insulting people and filming these incidents.
The police spokesperson also emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents, stating that it is crucial for law enforcement to be able to arrest individuals responsible for such behavior. The transport company HTM is investigating ways to prevent similar incidents in the future, but acknowledges the challenges in enforcing regulations on an open system where passengers can enter and exit trams at any time.
The spokesperson for HTM also mentioned that issuing a travel ban to the vlogger would not be effective, as it is difficult to police such measures in an open tram system.
This incident highlights the ongoing need for awareness and action against homophobia and other forms of discrimination in public spaces.
