Neko Health, a body-scanning AI health startup co-founded by Spotify’s Daniel Ek and Hjalmar Nilsonne, has expanded to London, marking its first international location outside of Sweden. The company’s goal is to improve preventative healthcare through annual full-body scans and AI-powered insights to detect conditions like heart disease and skin cancer. For £299, customers receive a series of scans and tests that generate millions of data points to determine their health status across various conditions, followed by an in-person consultation with a doctor.
Neko Health has had a strong start in Stockholm, where it opened two clinics in its first year, having scanned 2,707 people. Of these, 78.5% had no health issues, while 14.1% required further medical treatment. The company identified 1% of visitors with severe cardiovascular, metabolic, or cancerous conditions, none of whom were aware of their conditions prior to visiting Neko.
The company’s name is inspired by the Japanese word for cat, referencing cats’ nine lives, or the hope that the system will provide users with a lot of lucky breaks. Despite the involvement of a major tech figure like Daniel Ek, the company aims for a subtle approach, which can sometimes make it difficult for people to recognize the clinic.
The London clinic is discreetly marked only by its logo at the top of a glass doorway, with the rest of the operation below ground level. The interior is designed with an elegant and futuristic aesthetic, featuring sparse furniture, muted colors, lighting, and soothing electronic music. The process involves a series of tests, including height and weight measurements, a cylindrical chamber with 70 sensors, eye pressure and blood pressure scans, and a grip test, followed by a blood sample collection by a clinician.
