Volvo Unveils Next-Generation Electric Semi-Truck with Double the Range
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – September 3, 2024 – Volvo Trucks announced today that it will launch a next-generation, long-range electric semi-truck in the second half of 2025, boasting double the range of its current model. The new FH Electric, as it’s called, will offer a driving range of 600 kilometers(373 miles) on a single charge, compared to the current model’s 300 kilometers (186 miles).
The increased range is attributed to Volvo’s new e-axle drive system technology, whichintegrates the electric motor and transmission into the rear axle, freeing up space for larger battery packs. While the final battery capacity will be announced closer to the launch, Volvo confirmed that the FH Electric will feature eight batteries, compared to the current model’s six.
For many customers, six batteries are sufficient, but for regional or long-haul transport, this new truck will be excellent, said Helena Lind, a Volvo representative.
The current FH Electric model will continue to be produced, catering to customers with shorter range requirements.
Since 2019, Volvo has delivered over 3,800 electric trucks to customers in 47 countries, with a current electric truck lineup of eight models. The company aims to achieve a net-zero emissions product portfolio by 2040. In May of this year, Volvo sold50 electric trucks to Amazon.
Volvo’s announcement comes amidst a growing trend of major automotive manufacturers investing in long-range electric semi-trucks. Tesla and Daimler (parent company of Mercedes-Benz) are also testing their own long-haul electric semi-trucks, aiming to electrify the trucking industry.
The introduction of the new FH Electric signals Volvo’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. The increased range significantly expands the potential applications for electric trucks, making them a viable option for a wider range of transportation needs.
The new FH Electric is expected to be a game-changer for the trucking industry, offering acompelling alternative to diesel-powered trucks. With its extended range and advanced technology, the new model is poised to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable future for transportation.
