Trump Claims Unprecedented Right to Interfere in 2020 Election, Drawing Sharp Rebuke from Harris
In a startling statement, former President Donald Trump, known for his blunt rhetoric, declared on Sunday, Eastern Time, that he had every right to intervene in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The comment, made during an interview with Fox News, comes as Trump faces federal and state charges for his efforts to overturn his loss to Democratic President Joe Biden.
Who’s ever heard of such a thing? You get sued for interfering in a presidential election, and you have every right to do it, Trump said in the interview, lambasting the Department of Justice for what he perceives as unfair treatment.
The former president further contended that the legal scrutiny has not diminished his popularity, but rather, it has boosted his poll numbers, suggesting that his supporters have always doubted the legitimacy of the charges against him.
You get indicted, and your poll numbers go up? When people get indicted, your poll numbers go down. It’s ridiculous, he remarked.
Vice President Harris Hits Back
Reacting promptly on Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, and her campaign team issued a scathing statement, denouncing Trump’s latest comments.
Donald Trump’s campaign promises — from ‘terminating’ the Constitution to jailing his political opponents and pledging to rule as a dictator on ‘day one’ — all clearly demonstrate his belief that he is above the law, Harris’ spokesperson, Sarafina Chitika, said in a statement. Now, Trump claims he had ‘every right’ to interfere in the 2020 election. In reality, he did not.
Legal Challenges Surrounding Trump
Trump has consistently maintained, since the conclusion of the 2020 election in December, that he was the rightful winner and has refused to concede to Biden. This stance culminated in the January 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol by his supporters, an attempt to disrupt the certification of Biden’s victory, which shocked the world.
At the federal level, Trump is being charged with defrauding the American people, obstructing Congress’s certification of Biden’s win, and剥夺选民的公平选举权. Last month, he was also indicted for allegedly attempting to illegally overturn the outcome of the 2020 election.
In addition, Trump faces similar charges in Georgia’s Fulton County, with allegations of racketeering carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years. These charges stem from a January 2, 2021, phone call in which he pressured Georgia’s top election official, Brad Raffensperger, to find enough votes to reverse his narrow loss in the state. Raffensperger refused to comply.
As the Republican presidential nominee for this year’s election, Trump has yet to表态 whether he would unconditionally accept a loss to his Democratic opponent, Harris, in the upcoming polls. His continued claims and legal battles have raised concerns about the potential impact on the democratic process and the acceptance of election results.
