Bamboo Pole Relay Tradition: A Timeless Legacy at Tarim University
In the heart of the Taklamakan Desert, on the edge of China’s vast Xinjiang region, lies Tarim University – an institution with a storied past and a unique tradition that has persevered for decades. The Bamboo Pole Relay, a signature event at the annual school sports meet, not only serves as a thrilling finale but also symbolizes the indomitable spirit of those who built and nurtured the university from the ground up.
This tradition is deeply intertwined with the founding history of Tarim University. Established in 1958, the university, initially named Tarim River Agricultural University, was conceived by the local agricultural committee in response to the need for an agricultural institution in the Alar region of Xinjiang. Set amidst the rugged beauty of the desert and the tenacious presence of the ubiquitous poplar trees, the university has since evolved into a beacon of knowledge and resilience.
In 1960, the then Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, General Wang Zhen, visited the campus and proposed renaming the university to Tarim Agricultural垦University, which he personally inscribed. The name was later changed to Tarim University in 2004, reflecting its broader academic scope and its role in educating future generations.
The early days of the university were marked by extraordinary hardship and determination. With only 19 teachers and about 500 students, the pioneering educators and learners cleared the wilderness, tamed the desert, and built their classrooms from the land itself. Sleeping in makeshift shelters and conducting lessons under the shade of poplar trees, they embodied the spirit of Tireless Struggle, Self-Reliance, Rooting in the Frontier, and Dedication to Service.
The Bamboo Pole Relay, a race where participants carry bamboo poles, is a living testament to these early struggles. The relay has been a part of the annual sports meet since the university’s inception, symbolizing the pioneering spirit and the unyielding determination of the early pioneers. The event serves as a reminder to current students of the sacrifices and perseverance that shaped their alma mater.
The Tarim University Museum, established in 1999 and renovated in 2018 to mark the 60th anniversary of the university, stands as a repository of this rich history. Covering over 1,100 square meters, the museum is divided into nine sections, chronicling the university’s journey from its inception to the present day. It showcases artifacts such as the university’s first charter, photographs capturing the early days of desert education, and the humble tools that were once wielded by the pioneering faculty and students.
Through its exhibits, the museum tells a story of resilience and progress. From the humble beginnings of a few classrooms in the desert to its current status as a reputable educational institution, Tarim University is a testament to the power of human determination and the enduring impact of a shared legacy. As students continue to participate in the Bamboo Pole Relay, they carry forward not just a physical tradition, but also the intangible spirit of their predecessors – a spirit that has weathered the sands of time and remains a source of inspiration for all who seek to make a difference in the world.
In a region where nature’s challenges are immense, Tarim University stands as a beacon of hope, innovation, and the indomitable human spirit. The Bamboo Pole Relay tradition, a symbol of the university’s roots, serves as a powerful reminder of the past and an encouragement for the future, ensuring that the legacy of those early pioneers lives on.
