Guangzhou, China – August 31, 2024 – China’s short track sprinting standards have significantly improved compared to previous years, according to renowned Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 academic year at the Guangzhou No. 3 Middle School Education Group, Su praised the new generation of young athletes for their clear goals and outstanding performances, suggesting that there is much to learn from them.

From what I’ve observed, the level of short track sprinting in China has improved dramatically, Su Bingtian stated during the ceremony. The athlete, known for his exceptional speed and dedication, highlighted the remarkable performance of the Chinese athletics team at the Paris Olympics, which exceeded expectations.

The Guangzhou No. 3 Middle School is recognized as an excellent traditional athletics school in Guangdong Province. Su Bingtian announced the establishment of the Su Bingtian Reserve Talent Training Base at the school. The base aims to encourage quality social sports organizations to enter campuses and provide after-school sports services, fostering the physical health of young people and the cultivation of future talents.

Often, journalists and friends ask me what advice I would give to young athletes. I believe that not giving advice is the best advice, Su Bingtian said. He pointed out that the 33rd Summer Olympic Games marked the beginning of a shift in the age demographics of Chinese athletes, with the 00s taking center stage.

Although they are young and lack combat experience, their overall performance is excellent. They have achieved greater heights through more precise methods, Su Bingtian noted. He suggested that older athletes should learn from their younger counterparts and pay more attention to their ideas.

During the Paris Olympics, the Chinese athletics team’s performance was particularly noteworthy. Su Bingtian highlighted the victory of Yang Jiayu in the women’s 20-kilometer race walking event, which was a significant achievement. Additionally, the Chinese men’s 4×100-meter relay team, composed of Deng Zhijun, Xie Zhenye, Yan Haijin, and Chen Jiapeng, finished seventh with a season-best time of 38.06 seconds.

This edition of the Olympics was challenging for the Chinese athletics team, as most of the participants were veteran athletes, Su Bingtian explained. He pointed out that in the short track sprinting events, the 4×100-meter relay team, led by Xie Zhenye, aimed to maintain a position in the top 8 on the international stage. Only by maintaining this level can we hope to achieve higher standards in the future. Moreover, the experience of participating in the Olympics is invaluable for the growth of young athletes, he added.

Looking forward, Su Bingtian emphasized the importance of selecting and training young talent through various methods. The Su Bingtian Speed Research and Training Center has several sections, one of which is dedicated to talent selection for young athletes. I believe that many potential talents are in schools. We will select better schools for collaboration, hoping to discover more talents from within and help them grow through more scientific training methods, Su Bingtian concluded.

The establishment of the Su Bingtian Reserve Talent Training Base at Guangzhou No. 3 Middle School is a significant step in nurturing the next generation of Chinese sprinters. With Su Bingtian’s guidance and dedication, the future of Chinese short track sprinting looks promising, building on the remarkable progress made in recent years.
