Beijing, August 31, 2024 – China’s weather patterns are set to undergo significant changes in the coming days, with the north braces for rainfall and a cold air front, while the south faces a resurgence of high temperatures, according to the latest forecasts from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA).
Severe Weather in the North
The northern regions are on alert as a series of weather systems are expected to bring rainfall and cooler temperatures. Over the past 24 hours, the western part of the Sichuan Basin and other areas have experienced heavy rainfall, with some regions in Sichuan, Chongqing, Zhejiang, and other provinces recording high temperatures.
The CMA has warned that in the next three days, certain parts of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang are at risk of暴雨 (heavy rain)灾害 (disasters), with potential for secondary disasters and the dangers posed by severe convective weather. Residents in these areas have been advised to take precautions to safeguard against possible flooding and other related hazards.
Heatwave in the South
Conversely, the southern regions are experiencing a renewed spell of high temperatures. The eastern part of Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, and other provinces have seen temperatures soar to 35-37°C, with some areas reaching as high as 38-40°C.
The CMA predicts that the heatwave will intensify in the coming week, with the eastern part of Sichuan and Chongqing likely to see temperatures reach 40-42°C. From August 31st, the heat is expected to spread across Jiangnan and Guangdong, with temperatures reaching 35-36°C, and some areas exceeding 37°C.
Rainfall and Wind Patterns
From August 31st to September 1st, the eastern part of Northwest China, central and eastern Inner Mongolia, North China, Northeast China, and the western part of the Huaihe River region are expected to experience light to moderate rain, with some areas experiencing heavy rain. These regions will also face winds of 4-5 levels, with gusts reaching 6-7 levels.
Additionally, on August 31st, scattered heavy to暴雨 (heavy rain) will be seen in southern Guangdong, southeastern Guangxi, western and northern Yunnan, southern and eastern Hainan Island, western and southern Sichuan Basin, and other areas. These weather conditions will be accompanied by short-term heavy rainfall, with hourly rainfall intensity reaching 20-40 mm, and locally up to 60 mm, as well as isolated thunderstorms and strong winds.
From September 2nd to 4th, the eastern part of Northwest China, Inner Mongolia, the northern part of North China, and the Northeast will experience another round of light to moderate rain or showers, with some areas seeing heavy rain or暴雨 (heavy rain).
Impact on Energy Supply and Health
The extreme weather conditions are likely to have significant implications for energy supply and public health. The high temperatures in the south are expected to put a strain on the energy grid, with increased demand for air conditioning and other cooling systems. Health authorities have issued advisories for the public to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
The CMA has urged local authorities and residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of the adverse weather conditions. As China continues to grapple with the challenges posed by its diverse weather patterns, the importance of accurate forecasting and timely warnings cannot be overstated.
