Powerful Storm Shanshan Drenches Japan, Raising Concerns of Flooding and Landslides
Tokyo, Japan – Typhoon Shanshan, the 10th typhoon of the year, brought heavy rain to a wide swathe of Japan on August 30, prompting warnings of potential flooding, landslides, andother natural disasters. As of 9:00 AM local time, the storm was located near Kunisaki City, Oita Prefecture, moving northeastwardat a speed of 10 kilometers per hour.
The typhoon’s northward movement has led to the formation of active rain clouds across western and eastern Japan, resulting in torrential downpours in numerous areas. Rainfall data collected bylocal weather stations revealed significant precipitation levels. For instance, Hiratsuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture recorded 54 millimeters of rain in the hour ending at 8:00 AM, while Setagaya Ward in Tokyo saw 31.5 millimeters.
Further data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) indicated that Matsusaka City in Mie Prefecture experienced 48 millimeters of rainfall in the same hour, while Ootocho in Kochi Prefecture recorded 35 millimeters.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a warning that the risk of disasters could escalate suddenly due to the potential formation of linear rainbands. These bands are expected to affect northern Kyushu, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and the Tokai region until the end of August 30, Shikoku until August 31, and the Kinki region fromthe evening of August 30 to August 31.
The JMA urged the public to take precautions against various hazards, including landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, river overflows, storm surges, and strong winds and waves. The agency emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and taking necessary safety measures.
With the worsening conditions, even traveling to evacuation centers can be dangerous, the JMA stated. Therefore, we advise people to seek refuge in nearby sturdy buildings, higher floors of apartment buildings, or rooms away from slopes to ensure their safety.
