According to the KoreaTourism Organization, the nation received 1.41 million international tourists last month, marking a 36.5% year-on-year increase andreaching 97% of pre-pandemic levels seen in July 2019.
The resurgence in tourism is attributed to the easing of travel restrictions and the growing global demand for travel experiences. Japan followed closely with 243,000 visitors, followed by Taiwan (143,000) and the United States (121,000).

The growth in inbound tourism is mirrored by a similar trend in outbound travel. South Koreans have also been eager to travel abroad, with 2.5 million leaving the country in July, a 16.2% increase compared to the same period last year. This figure represents 95% ofthe pre-pandemic level in July 2019.
Over the first seven months of the year, South Korea recorded a total of 16.53 million outbound travelers, nearly double the number of inbound tourists. This indicates a strong appetite for travel among South Koreans, further contributing to the globaltourism recovery.
The resurgence of tourism is a welcome boost for South Korea’s economy, particularly for sectors like hospitality, retail, and transportation. The government is actively promoting tourism through various initiatives, including marketing campaigns, visa facilitation, and infrastructure development.
The strong rebound in tourism also highlights the resilience of theindustry and its ability to adapt to changing circumstances. While the pandemic posed significant challenges, the industry has shown its ability to recover quickly and capitalize on the pent-up demand for travel.
The continued growth in tourism is expected to benefit South Korea’s economy and strengthen its position as a leading tourist destination. The country’s diverse cultural attractions, vibrant cities, and stunning natural landscapes continue to draw visitors from around the world.
However, the industry faces some challenges, including rising inflation, potential geopolitical instability, and the ongoing impact of climate change. The government and tourism stakeholders need to work together to address these challenges and ensurethe long-term sustainability of the sector.
The positive trends in tourism point towards a bright future for South Korea’s tourism industry. As the world continues to open up and travel restrictions ease further, the country is well-positioned to attract even more visitors and become a major player in the global tourism market.
