Yunnan Province Launches Campaign to Promote Helmet Use Among Motorcyclists

Kunming, China – With over 7.2 million motorcycles registered inYunnan Province, the local government is launching a new campaign to promote helmet use and safe riding practices. The campaign, titled Lucky Helmet, Protecting Youth, kickedoff on August 29th in Kunming, aiming to reduce traffic accidents and ensure the safety of motorcycle and electric bicycle riders.

The initiative comes asa response to the alarming number of motorcycle-related accidents in the province. According to the Yunnan Provincial Public Security Department’s Traffic Police Corps, 2,452 traffic accidents involving motorcycles occurred in the province between January and August25th, accounting for 38% of all traffic accidents. Many of these accidents resulted in fatalities, highlighting the importance of helmet use.

Yunnan, located in the mountainous region of Southwest China, has witnessed a surge inmotorcycle ownership in recent years, thanks to improved infrastructure and accessibility. Yang Fan, a second-year student at Yunnan Business College, exemplifies this trend. He explained that his parents both own motorcycles, and he recently purchased one himself. This increased motorcycle ownership has contributed to the growing concern about safety.

My hometown, Qiaojia County, is located in the Wumeng Mountains, where motorcycles are the primary mode of transportation, said Yang Fan. On the winding mountain roads, you often see people riding motorcycles.

Despite the rising number of motorcycles, the lack of helmet use remains a significant safety concern. Some motorcycle andelectric bicycle riders have died in traffic accidents because they did not wear helmets, causing huge losses to the safety of life and property of all traffic participants, said Jiang Aimin, Deputy Director of the Yunnan Provincial Public Security Department’s Traffic Police Corps.

The Lucky Helmet, Protecting Youth campaign aims to address thisissue through various initiatives. These include:

  • Public awareness campaigns: The campaign will utilize diverse channels to spread awareness about the importance of helmet use and safe riding practices.
  • Educational activities: The campaign will organize interactive events, such as traffic safety knowledge lectures, quizzes, and helmet giveaways, to educateriders about the benefits of wearing helmets.
  • Enforcement: The Yunnan Provincial Public Security Department’s Traffic Police Corps will strictly enforce helmet regulations and crack down on violators.

The campaign’s focus on youth is particularly significant, as young riders often underestimate the risks associated with motorcycle riding. Yang Fan,who participated in the launch event, expressed his newfound awareness of helmet safety. The data shows that wearing a helmet correctly can reduce the injury rate by 70% and the death rate by 40% in the event of an accident, he said. He shared this information with his family, urging them towear helmets while riding.

The Lucky Helmet, Protecting Youth campaign is a crucial step towards promoting a safer riding environment in Yunnan. By raising awareness, educating riders, and enforcing helmet regulations, the campaign aims to reduce the number of motorcycle-related accidents and protect the lives of riders and other road users.
