Heavy Rains Batter Guangdong, Guangzhou Records 175.6mm Rainfall
Guangzhou, China – Heavy rains lashed parts of Guangdong province onAugust 29th, causing widespread disruption and prompting authorities to issue emergency responses. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Guangzhou, where the city’s southern districtof Nansha received a staggering 175.6 millimeters of rain between 4 pm and 7 pm.
According to the Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Bureau, the downpours were triggered by a surge in rainfall across the Pearl River Delta and eastern Guangdong. A total of 16 towns and townships across the province recorded over 100 millimeters of rain, classified as heavyrain, while 97 other areas received between 50 and 100 millimeters, categorized as moderate rain.
The deluge led to the issuance of red alerts for heavy rain in several areas, including Yangchun, Xinxing, Nanhai, Shunde, Panyu, Nansha, and Raoping. The city of Guangzhou experienced a sudden drop in visibility, accompanied by thunder and lightning, prompting the city’s meteorological disaster emergency command center to activate a Level IV emergency response for heavy rain and thunderstorms at 5:21pm. The response was later upgraded to Level III at 6:07 pm as the downpour intensified.
Nansha’s Dongyong Town recorded an astonishing 145.8 millimeters of rain in just one hour. The heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding and traffic disruptions across the affected areas.
Meteorological experts advised residents to avoid venturing outdoors during the heavy rain and to steer clear of areas with significant water accumulation. They also urged people to exercise caution when walking through flooded areas, avoiding whirlpools and areas where water is surging, to prevent falling into manholes or pits. Residents were also advised to stay awayfrom electrical equipment to prevent electrocution.
The heavy rains are expected to continue in parts of Guangdong in the coming days, with authorities urging residents to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
