Northeast China Embraces Green Development, Strengthening Northern Ecological Shield
HARBIN,CHINA – The third episode of the six-part documentary series DecodingNortheast Revitalization focuses on the region’s green development strategy, highlighting the efforts to green the White Mountains and Black Waters of Northeast China. This vast region, encompassing the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning, is known for its sprawling forests, abundant wetlands, andfertile plains. It serves as a crucial ecological security barrier for northern China, boasting the highest proportion of forest area, wetland area, and nature reserves in the country.
A good ecological environment is a valuable resource for the economic and socialdevelopment of the Northeast region, and it is also an advantage for revitalizing the Northeast, emphasized Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The documentary highlights the significant transformation in the region’s forestry sector. In 2014, commerciallogging was completely halted in key state-owned forest areas of Heilongjiang province, marking a shift from exploitation to comprehensive protection. This decision, driven by the government’s commitment to ecological preservation, has seen tens of thousands of forestry workers transition from cutting trees to guarding forests.
Since then, thesekey state-owned forest areas have witnessed a notable increase in forest area, forest coverage, and forest stock, thanks to a multi-pronged approach involving halting logging, managing existing forests, promoting forest regeneration, and afforestation. This transition has proven President Xi’s statement true: Green mountains and clear waters areinvaluable assets, and improving the ecological environment is a vital part of enhancing productivity.
Beyond forestry, the documentary showcases the region’s broader commitment to ecological protection. Northeast China has adopted the principle that increasing greenery is increasing advantages, and protecting forests is protecting wealth. This has led to the development of various greenindustries, including forest understory economy, ice and snow tourism, and eco-tourism, contributing to the region’s high-quality development.
The positive impact of these efforts is evident in the return of wildlife to the region. As the ecological environment improves, populations of wild animals are steadily increasing.
Thedocumentary also highlights the ongoing efforts to combat desertification in the Kuerqin Sandy Land, a major ecological challenge in Inner Mongolia. Through the implementation of national key ecological projects such as the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest System, returning farmland to forests, and returning grazing land to grasslands, the region is activelycombating desertification and securing its ecological safety.
From the lush forests of the Greater Khingan Mountains and Changbai Mountains to the fertile Sanjiang Plain and the gradually greening Kuerqin Sandy Land, the Northeast region is painting a beautiful picture of harmony between humans and nature. The efforts to protect, increase, and revitalize green spaces are strengthening the northern ecological barrier, injecting new vitality into the region’s comprehensive revitalization in the new era.
The documentary Decoding Northeast Revitalization serves as a powerful testament to the region’s commitment to green development and its crucial role in safeguarding China’s ecological security. Itunderscores the importance of prioritizing ecological protection as a foundation for sustainable development and prosperity.
