451 Multinational Companies Gather in Qingdao for Fifth Leaders’ Summit
Qingdao, China, August 28, 2024 – The Fifth Multinational Companies Leaders’ Summit (Summit) kicked off in Qingdao on Wednesday, bringing together over 550 representatives from451 multinational companies. This year’s summit saw the participation of 99 first-time attendees.
The summit, themed Multinational Companies and China, is hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China and the People’s Government of Shandong Province. It aims to strengthen the mutually beneficial relationship between China and multinational companies, building on the spirit of President Xi Jinping’s congratulatory letter to the inaugural summit.
Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the crucial role of multinational companies in driving economic globalization and fostering anopen world economy. He highlighted the significance of this summit as the first major event focused on multinational companies since the conclusion of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
Standing at a new historical starting point, we hope to work together with multinational companies onthe grand stage of open development, said Zhang, to enhance mutual trust and share new opportunities in building a unified large market, developing new productive forces, achieving comprehensive green transformation, and promoting institutional opening up. Let us jointly write a new chapter in cooperation between China and multinational companies.
Lin Wu, Secretary of theShandong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, echoed these sentiments in his address, stating, We are willing to work with multinational companies to share major strategic opportunities, cultivate a modern industrial system, expand a vast consumer market, promote green and low-carbon transformation, and create an open and cooperative ecosystem. Hepledged Shandong’s commitment to creating a world-class business environment that is market-oriented, rule-based, and internationalized, providing comprehensive services to attract multinational companies to invest and operate in the province.
Wang Wentao, Minister of Commerce of China, delivered a video address, acknowledging the significant role multinationalcompanies have played in China’s reform and opening up over the past four decades. He emphasized that China’s modernization is a process driven by reform and opening up, and will continue to create new opportunities for multinational companies operating in China.
The summit is a high-level platform for multinational companies to learnabout China, invest in China, said Wang. We hope that everyone will make good use of this platform, deepen understanding, discover opportunities, and expand cooperation through communication and interaction.
Son Kyung-shik, Chairman of CJ Group from South Korea, expressed his confidence in the future of China’s economy andits growing interconnectedness with the global economy. He viewed the summit as a valuable platform for fostering dialogue and shared vision between Chinese and international businesses, paving the way for stronger and smoother collaboration.
During the summit, the International Trade and Economic Cooperation Institute of the Ministry of Commerce of China released a research report titled Multinational Companies in China: Sharing New Opportunities of ‘Chinese-style Modernization’.
The three-day summit will feature a series of events, including the Multinational Companies Development Forum, the Multinational Companies Investment and Exchange Cooperation Conference, and a special promotion session for the China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization Local Economic andTrade Cooperation Demonstration Zone.
