Alibaba Cloud Elevates Wuying to Top-Level Department, Signaling Focuson Terminal Cloud Computing

Hangzhou, China – August 27,2024 – Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of the Alibaba Group, has announced the elevation of its Wuying (Shadow)cloud desktop service to a top-level department, directly reporting to CEO Wu Yongming. This move signifies a strategic shift towards terminal cloud computing, a burgeoning sectorthat Alibaba believes will be a key driver of growth in the coming decade.

The announcement was made at the Wuying annual media communication event, where Zhang Xiantao, President of the Wuying Business Unit, revealed the department’s newstatus. Previously, Wuying was a sub-product line within the Elastic Computing product line.

Early this year, Alibaba Cloud identified two strategic products after reviewing its product lines, Zhang said. One is AI large models, and the other is Wuying computers. He emphasized the significance of terminal cloud computing, stating, Over the next ten years, terminal cloud computing will become a crucial growth area. As technology advances and cloud computing matures, this computing revolution will inevitably occur, and it’s already on the horizon.

Wuying, launched in 2020, offers a cloud-based desktop experience that allows users to access their applications and data from any device with an internet connection. The service has gained traction in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and government, offering advantages like cost-effectiveness, scalability, and improved security.

Thedecision to elevate Wuying to a top-level department underscores Alibaba Cloud’s commitment to this emerging technology. By placing it under the direct supervision of CEO Wu Yongming, the company demonstrates its belief in the potential of Wuying to become a major revenue generator and a key differentiator in the cloud computing market.

This move aligns with the broader industry trend of shifting towards edge computing and decentralized data processing. As more devices become connected and generate vast amounts of data, the need for processing power closer to the source becomes increasingly critical. Terminal cloud computing, with its ability to deliver a seamless desktop experience remotely, offers a compelling solution to thischallenge.

Alibaba Cloud’s focus on Wuying also reflects the company’s ambition to compete in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The development of large language models and other AI technologies requires significant computing power, which can be effectively addressed by terminal cloud computing solutions.

By investing heavily in Wuying and positioningit as a strategic priority, Alibaba Cloud aims to capitalize on the growing demand for cloud-based desktop solutions and establish itself as a leader in the terminal cloud computing market. This move is expected to drive further innovation and accelerate the adoption of cloud-based desktop experiences across various industries.
