From Seeds to Success: Rural Revitalization in China Through Gua Lou Cultivation

Linchuan, Jiangxi Province, China – In the heart ofJiangxi Province, nestled amidst the rolling hills of Linchuan District, a quiet revolution is unfolding. Led by a returning local, Tang Huanrong, thevillage of Lingxi is experiencing a resurgence, fueled by the humble gua lou, a type of gourd with a growing reputation for its medicinal and culinary properties.

Tang Huanrong, a native of Lingxi, had witnessed the prosperity of other regions and felt a strong desire to contribute to his hometown’s development. He was inspired by the Three Invites, Three Returns initiative, agovernment program aimed at attracting talented individuals back to rural areas, and saw an opportunity in the untapped potential of gua lou cultivation.

I am from this village, and seeing other places prosper, I wanted to come back and do something formy hometown, Tang Huanrong shared, recalling his initial motivation. He seized the opportunity presented by the abundance of unused land in the area and embarked on his journey to cultivate gua lou.

His initial efforts, however, were met with challenges. The early years saw a series of setbacks, with poor harvests anda lack of experience hindering his progress. Undeterred, Tang Huanrong sought guidance from experts at the Jiangxi Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Linchuan District Rural Revitalization Bureau. He also traveled extensively, learning from experienced gua lou cultivators across the country.

Through persistent effort and a willingness to learn, Tang Huanrong transformed his initial small plot of land into a thriving 3,000-acre gua lou plantation. His success has not only revitalized Lingxi but also spread to neighboring villages, with the cultivation of gua lou becoming a source of income for many local farmers.

One acre ofgua lou can produce 230 to 360 kilograms of gua lou seeds, generating a revenue of around 6,000 yuan per acre, Tang Huanrong explained. Two workers, if they are diligent, can manage about 50 acres of gua lou, earning a profit of200,000 yuan annually after deducting all costs.

Tang Huanrong’s commitment to community extends beyond providing financial opportunities. He actively engages with farmers, offering technical support and guidance through a dedicated WeChat group. This ensures that farmers are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to cultivate high-quality gua lou.

The success of the gua lou project has not only brought economic prosperity to the region but also highlighted the potential of rural revitalization through innovative agricultural practices. Tang Huanrong’s vision extends beyond traditional farming, with plans to develop value-added products like gua lou wine and snacks.He envisions a future where these products will be sold across China through online platforms and retail outlets.

The Linchuan District United Front Work Department has recognized the significance of Tang Huanrong’s efforts and the broader potential of attracting returning local talent. They have implemented initiatives like establishing a Hometown Talent Database andorganizing Hometown Talent Forums to encourage more individuals to contribute to the development of their hometowns.

The story of Tang Huanrong and the gua lou revolution in Lingxi is a testament to the power of community, innovation, and the unwavering spirit of rural revitalization.
