G-K Railway Upgrade Boosts Xinjiang’s Economic Development

Urumqi, Xinjiang, August 27, 2024– The G-K Railway, a crucial artery in China’s northwest transportation network, has undergone a significant upgrade, further propelling Xinjiang’s economic development. The railway, stretching 1,206 kilometers from Golmud in Qinghai Province to Korla in Xinjiang, plays a vital role in connecting thetwo regions and facilitating trade and transportation.

The expansion and renovation project, initiated in September 2023, has been completed. The Xinjiang section, which was finished on August 26, saw the addition of 28new stations, all of which are now operational.

The completion of the upgrade marks a significant milestone for the G-K Railway, significantly increasing its capacity and efficiency. The project included the construction of 28 new stations, including theMilan East Station, a new freight connection line between the Tukou Railway and the G-K Railway in Korla, additional tracks at the Korla and Korla East stations, and upgraded power infrastructure.

With the opening of all 28 stations, the G-K Railway’s capacity has increased by19.2 pairs of trains per day, reaching a total of 34.2 pairs per day, said Hu Guoxing, deputy commander of the Korla Railway Construction Command. This enhancement significantly boosts the railway’s freight transport capacity.

The G-K Railway traverses diverse landscapes, includingdeserts, gobi, and swamps. Some of the stations are located within the Lop Nur Wild Camel National Nature Reserve. Construction teams have prioritized environmental protection while completing the construction of the 28 new stations.

The upgraded G-K Railway is expected to play a pivotal role in Xinjiang’s economic development by facilitatingthe transportation of goods and people, connecting the region to the rest of China and beyond. The increased capacity will enable the transportation of larger volumes of goods, supporting the growth of industries such as agriculture, mining, and manufacturing in Xinjiang.

The railway’s upgrade is also expected to boost tourism in Xinjiang. The regionis home to numerous scenic attractions, including the Taklamakan Desert, the Tian Shan Mountains, and the ancient Silk Road cities.
