New School Year Brings Concerns as COVID-19 and Flu Cases Rise inChina
Guangzhou, China – As the new school year approaches inChina, concerns are rising over the potential for a surge in COVID-19 and influenza cases. Recent reports indicate an increase in both infections, prompting callsfor heightened vigilance and timely treatment.
According to data released by the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of reported COVID-19 casesrose significantly in June and July, with 8,246 cases reported in June and 18,384 cases reported in July.
Dr. Peng Jie, director of the Difficult Infection Diagnosis and Treatment Center atSouthern Medical University’s Southern Hospital, confirmed this trend, stating that their fever clinics have seen a doubling in the number of positive COVID-19 and influenza cases. While most patients experience mild symptoms, Dr. Peng emphasized the importanceof not taking the situation lightly, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses. He warned that a complacent attitude could lead to long COVID and other complications, jeopardizing public health.
We recommend that people who test positive for COVID-19 seek timelytreatment with antiviral medications, Dr. Peng said. This can help alleviate symptoms, shorten the duration of illness, and reduce the risk of transmission. He added that while currently available antiviral medications for COVID-19 are prescription drugs, they are covered by medical insurance, making them more accessible.
Dr. Li Dongzeng, director of the Respiratory and Infectious Disease Department at Beijing You’an Hospital, affiliated with Capital Medical University, echoed the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment, particularly for high-risk groups. He highlighted the benefits of antiviral medications in reducing viral load, accelerating recovery, and minimizing household transmission.
Antiviraltreatment is crucial, especially for vulnerable populations who are at higher risk of developing severe complications, Dr. Li said. It’s important to differentiate between COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses like the flu or common cold, as antiviral drugs are specifically designed to combat COVID-19 and can significantly reduce the severityof the illness.
In response to the rising demand, pharmaceutical companies and distributors are working to ensure adequate supply of both COVID-19 and influenza medications. A spokesperson for the pharmaceutical company, Xiansheng Pharmaceutical, confirmed that they have seen a significant increase in demand for their antiviral drug, Xianoxin, since last month and expect this trend to continue. Xianoxin is the first orally administered antiviral drug for COVID-19 to receive regular approval in China.
While the situation is being closely monitored, experts advise the public to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures such as wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, and frequent handwashing. They also encourage individuals to stay informed about the latest health guidelines and seek medical attention promptly if they experience any symptoms.
As the new school year begins, parents and educators are urged to prioritize the health and safety of students, particularly those with underlying health conditions. Schools are advised toimplement measures to reduce the risk of transmission, such as promoting good hygiene practices, ensuring adequate ventilation, and encouraging students to stay home if they are feeling unwell.
The recent increase in COVID-19 and influenza cases serves as a reminder that these respiratory illnesses remain a public health concern. By taking proactive measures andseeking timely treatment, individuals can help mitigate the risks and ensure a healthy and productive school year for all.
