China Issues Blue Alert for Severe Convective Weather in Eastern Regions

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — The China Meteorological Administration(CMA) has issued a blue alert for severe convective weather, warning of potential strong thunderstorms, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall in eastern China.

The alert, effective from 2 p.m. on Aug. 27 to 2 p.m. on Aug. 28, covers parts ofsoutheastern Jiangsu, Shanghai, northern Zhejiang, northeastern Fujian, and southern Jiangxi. These areas are expected to experience thunderstorms with winds exceeding 8 on the Beaufort scale, accompanied by hailstorms.

The CMA also predicts heavy rainfall in easternand southern parts of the Jiangnan region and southeastern parts of the Jianghuai region. Some areas, particularly southeastern Jiangsu, northern Zhejiang, and northern Fujian, could experience hourly rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters, with the maximum reaching over70 millimeters.

The peak of the severe convective weather is expected to occur from the afternoon to the evening.

To mitigate potential risks associated with the severe weather, the CMA has issued the following advisories:

  • Government agencies and relevant departments: Prepare for short-term heavy rain, lightning, andstrong winds, and ensure readiness for artificial hail suppression operations.
  • Outdoor individuals and workers: Minimize outdoor activities and stay away from temporary structures like awnings and billboards.
  • Livestock owners: Move poultry and livestock into covered shelters, secure doors and windows, and reinforce sheds.
  • Watercraftoperators: Return to port or take alternative routes to avoid hazardous conditions. Construction sites should cover building materials and secure outdoor items susceptible to rain, wind, and hail.
  • Urban and rural communities: Inspect drainage systems and prepare for flood control. Implement preventative measures against potential landslides, mudslides, and debris flows.

The CMA urges the public to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during the period of severe convective weather.
