China’s Crime Rate Continues to Decline: Public Security Ministry Reports Significant Drop inCriminal Cases

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua)— China’s public security authorities have reported a significant decrease in criminal cases in the first seven months of 2023, highlighting the country’songoing efforts to maintain social stability and promote high-quality development.

At a press conference held by the State Council Information Office on Tuesday, Qi Yanjun,vice minister of Public Security and head of the ministry’s daily operations, announced that the number of criminal cases filed nationwide in 2023 had decreased by 4.8% compared to 2022. Furthermore, the number of public security cases handled remained largely unchanged from the previous year.

The most notable decline was observed in the first seven months of 2023, with criminal case filings dropping by a substantial 30.1% year-on-year. This marks the 14th consecutive month of year-on-year decline in criminal case filings.

The number of telecommunications and network fraud cases filed has also decreased by 23.8% year-on-year, marking an 11-month consecutivedecline, Qi said. He also highlighted the impressive success rate in solving intentional homicide cases, which currently stands at 99.94%, the highest level in history.

These positive developments are attributed to the concerted efforts of the public security organs in strengthening law enforcement, improving crime prevention measures, and fostering asafer environment for citizens. The ministry’s focus on combating telecommunications and network fraud has been particularly effective, with a dedicated crackdown on criminal gangs and a proactive approach to public awareness campaigns.

The sustained decline in crime rates has contributed to a significant improvement in public safety and a heightened sense of security among the Chinesepeople. A recent survey revealed that the public security index reached 98.2% in 2023, marking the fourth consecutive year above 98%. This positive trend has also been recognized by foreigners residing in China, with many praising the country as one of the safest in the world.
