Heavy Rains in Eastern China, Continued Heatwave in Sichuan and Chongqing
Beijing, August 27, 2024 – China isfacing a mix of weather extremes, with heavy rains affecting eastern regions while Sichuan and Chongqing continue to grapple with a persistent heatwave.
According to theCentral Meteorological Administration (CMA), parts of Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, and Shandong experienced heavy rainfall yesterday, with some areas receiving torrential downpours.The Sichuan Basin, Jianghan, Jianghuai, and Jiangnan regions saw temperatures soaring, with localized areas in the Sichuan Basin reaching 40-42.1 degrees Celsius.
The CMA forecasts that the next three days willbring a risk of heavy rainfall in southern Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and western Xinjiang, urging authorities to prepare for potential secondary disasters and strong convective weather. Sichuan and Chongqing are expected to continue experiencing high temperatures, raising concerns about the impacton energy supply and public health. Additionally, strong winds are anticipated in the eastern East China Sea from August 27 to 28, posing a potential threat to maritime navigation.
Heavy Rainfall in Shandong, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region
From 8:00 AM yesterday to6:00 AM today, parts of southern Beijing, eastern Hebei, central and southern Tianjin, Shandong, and northern Jiangsu experienced heavy to torrential rainfall. Some areas in Dongying, Binzhou, and Weifang in Shandong, as well as Cangzhou in Hebei, received extremely heavy rainfall,with accumulated precipitation reaching 250-386 millimeters. The highest hourly rainfall rates ranged from 40-100 millimeters, with localized areas in Dongying and Weifang exceeding 120-147 millimeters.
Heatwave in Sichuan Basin, Jianghan, Jiangnan
Yesterday, parts of the Sichuan Basin, southern Shaanxi, Jianghan, Jiangnan, Jianghuai, and western and central Huang-Huai regions experienced high temperatures ranging from 35-39 degrees Celsius. The central and southern parts of the Sichuan Basin saw localized temperatures reaching 40-42.1 degrees Celsius.

Eastern China: Scattered Heavy Rainfall
From 8:00 AM on August 27 to 8:00 AM on August 28, parts of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai are expected to experience heavyrainfall, with most areas receiving heavy to torrential rain, and localized areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall (100-110 millimeters).
Strong Convective Weather
Parts of northeastern Inner Mongolia, eastern Jianghuai, northeastern and southern Jiangnan, and southeastern Southwest China are forecast to experience thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail, with wind speeds reaching 8 or above.
Short-Term Heavy Rainfall
Parts of eastern Huang-Huai, western Jianghan, southwestern and eastern Jianghuai, central and eastern Jiangnan, southern Southwest China, and southern South China are expected to experience short-term heavy rainfall, with hourly rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters. Localized areas in northern and southern Zhejiang, and northern Fujian, could see hourly rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters, with maximum rainfall potentially exceeding 80 millimeters. The CMA issued a blue alert for strong convective weather at 6:00 AM on August 27.
Continued Heatwave in Sichuan and Chongqing
Daytime temperatures on August 27 are expected to exceed 35 degrees Celsius in southern Shaanxi, central and eastern Sichuan, Chongqing, northern and eastern Guizhou, western and southeastern Hubei, Jiangnan, and most of South China. Localized areas in southern Shaanxi, eastern Sichuan, Chongqing, eastern Guizhou, western and central Hunan, most of Zhejiang, and eastern Fujian are expected to experience temperatures ranging from 37-39 degrees Celsius, with localized areas in western and central Chongqing,and southeastern Sichuan reaching 40 degrees Celsius or higher. The CMA issued a yellow alert for high temperatures at 6:00 AM on August 27.
Domestic Weather Forecast for the Next Three Days
From 8:00 AM on August 27 to 8:00AM on August 28, western Xinjiang Tarim Basin, southeastern Shandong, eastern Jianghuai, eastern Jiangnan, and southwestern Yunnan are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with localized areas in southeastern Jiangsu, western Shanghai, and northern Zhejiang experiencing torrential rainfall.
Parts of southern Hebei, southern Tianjin, most of Shandong, eastern Henan, central and northern Anhui, northern Jiangsu, and northern Zhejiang are expected to experience winds of 5-6 levels, with gusts reaching 7-8 levels. The southern Bohai Sea and central and western Yellow Sea are forecast to experience winds of 7 levels,with gusts reaching 8-9 levels.
