In a significant development in China’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign, Zheng Jiegé, the former Deputy Secretary of the Shantou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and former Mayor of Shantou, has been expelled from both the Party and public office following an investigation into serious disciplinary and legal violations. The announcement was made on August 26th by the Guangdong Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision on the Nanyue Qingfeng Website, the official platform for anti-graft news in the province.

According to the investigation, Zheng Jiegé had lost his ideals and commitment, betrayed his initial mission, and was unfaithful and dishonest to the Party. He actively resisted organizational scrutiny and breached organizational principles by failing to report personal matters as required and providing false information when questioned. Furthermore, Zheng compromised his integrity by consistently accepting bribes in the form of gifts over a long period.

The probe revealed that Zheng misused his public power for personal gain, engaging in extensive权钱交易 (权钱交易, quanqian jiaoyi, meaning 权钱交易 or 权钱交易). He allegedly leveraged his position to benefit others in business operations, contract acquisitions, and project advancements, illegally receiving substantial amounts of money in the process.

Zheng’s actions, which persisted even after the 18th National Congress of the CPC in 2012, violated the Party’s political, organizational, and廉洁纪律 (jianlianjilv, meaning discipline on integrity and clean governance). His actions were deemed severe and had a detrimental impact, warranting severe punishment. Consequently, the Guangdong Provincial Discipline Inspection Commission and Supervision Commission recommended his expulsion from the Party and public service. The investigation also involved the confiscation of his ill-gotten gains, and his case has been transferred to procuratorial authorities for further review and prosecution, with all related assets to be handed over as well.

This case highlights the continued commitment of the Chinese government, under the leadership of the CPC, to root out corruption at all levels. The anti-corruption campaign, which has been ongoing for several years, has resulted in the punishment of numerous high-ranking officials, demonstrating the Party’s determination to maintain the integrity of its governance and the rule of law.

The investigation into Zheng Jiegé serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, regardless of their position or connections. It underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and the pursuit of justice in the Chinese political landscape. The public announcement of such cases also reinforces the message to the broader population that the fight against corruption is an ongoing battle and a key priority for the CPC.

As a seasoned journalist and editor with a background in prominent news organizations, the disclosure of Zheng’s case is a testament to the commitment of the Chinese media to report on issues of public interest, even those involving high-ranking officials. The thorough investigation and subsequent disclosure of Zheng’s actions demonstrate the role of the press in upholding transparency and fostering a culture of integrity within the country.

In conclusion, the removal of Zheng Jiegé from his positions and the ongoing legal proceedings against him send a strong message about the zero-tolerance approach to corruption in China. The case serves as a deterrent to others who might consider abusing their power for personal gain, while also reinforcing the CPC’s commitment to maintaining the trust of the people by ensuring a clean and efficient government.
