Poetry and the Distance: Zhejiang’s Green Workspaces Attract Young Digital Creators to Rural Life

Wenzhou, China, August25, 2024 – Imagine working amidst the tranquility of the countryside, surrounded by lush greenery, the gentle rustle of leaves, and the chirping of crickets. This idyllic scene is becoming a reality for a growing number of young digital creators in Taishun County, Zhejiang Province, who are choosing to trade the hustle and bustle of city life for the serenity of rural green workspaces.

The recent opening ceremony of the NO Where Wuyou Village in Shanglan Village, Liufeng Township, attracted over 50 young digital creators, eager to embrace a new way of life and work. This initiative marks a shift in the traditional notion of work, offering a unique blend of creativity, community engagement, and a connection with nature.

These digital creators, as they are collectively known, are not just temporary visitors; they are becoming integral parts of the village community, contributing their skills and talents to revitalize the local area. The Wuyou Village project, meaning No Worries Village, provides them with renovated, comfortable accommodations in thevillage’s vacant houses. In exchange for their contributions, they receive reduced rent and other benefits.

The creators, hailing from diverse backgrounds, are encouraged to utilize their expertise and interests to engage in various community service projects. They participate in cultural exploration, contribute to village development initiatives, and even collaborate on artistic projects. For instance, in early August, students from the China Academy of Art’s Architecture and Art College spent ten days in the village, not only contributing to its development but also collaborating with Zhejiang University Professor Zhuoxin to create a stunning bamboo structure named Lanting, a testament to the artistic potential of the village.

Young people are not only participants in village construction but also creators of its stories, says Zhang Zhongyi, the founder of Wuyou Village. He believes that the diverse skills and perspectives of these young creators can effectively address the challenges faced by rural development.

Taishun County currently boasts 13 suchdigital creator spaces, scattered throughout its picturesque landscapes. These spaces, including the Yilian Huadong Grand Canyon, Jiaojiang Tulou (earthen houses), Wenxiang Lake Theme Park, Langsi Coffee Plantation, Kucun, Luli, Nanshanli, and Kongshan Yin, have attracted over 8,000 young individuals seeking a harmonious blend of work and nature.

The influx of these creators has brought a fresh wave of energy and innovation to Taishun. New businesses, such as youth hostels, cafes, pubs, and camping sites, are flourishing, enriching the tourist experience and creating new employment opportunities forlocal villagers.

The upcoming 2024 Digital Creator Conference, scheduled for September in Taishun, will further solidify the county’s position as a hub for digital creativity. The conference will focus on themes like new digital office spaces, digital tourism, digital lifestyles, and digital entrepreneurship. It aims tobring together digital creators from around the world for a dialogue on the future of digital innovation.

The event will also introduce a series of initiatives, including a dedicated policy framework, a standard for digital creator living spaces, a creator alliance, a creator academy, and an information platform. These initiatives aim to make Taishuna desirable destination for digital creators, attracting them with its natural beauty, vibrant community, and supportive environment.

Taishun’s natural beauty is our strength, but it’s our commitment to providing excellent services that truly keeps these creators here, says a representative from the Taishun County United Front Work Department. The county has recently launched online platforms, including a website, a mini-program, and a public account, offering tailored services for digital creators. These platforms provide information on local events, creator spaces, community groups, and policy updates, ensuring a seamless and comprehensive experience for creators.

Taishun is taking proactivesteps to further enhance its appeal to digital creators. The county is developing a comprehensive policy framework to support their needs, including incentives for entrepreneurship and investment in digital infrastructure. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable rural development, leveraging the creativity and energy of young digital creators to revitalize the local economy andpreserve its natural heritage.

The green workspaces of Taishun County are not just a trend; they represent a new paradigm for work and life, where individuals can pursue their passions, contribute to their communities, and find fulfillment in the harmony of nature and technology. As the movement gains momentum, it ispoised to inspire similar initiatives across China and beyond, fostering a future where creativity and sustainability go hand in hand.
