Seeds of Poetry Sprout at 2024 Chinese Children’s PoetryExchange Conference in Ninghai, Zhejiang
NINGBO, CHINA – August25, 2024 – The picturesque Lotus Moon Bay Ecological Agricultural Sightseeing Park in Ninghai County, Zhejiang Province, buzzed with creativityas nearly 40 young poets from across China gathered for the Seek Beauty, Walk the Path of Poetry in Ninghai Children’s Poetry Study Camp, a key event of the 2024 Chinese Children’s Poetry Exchange Conference.
The air was thick with the sweet scent of lotus blossoms and the vibrant chatter of children, each one a budding poet ready to capture thebeauty of their surroundings in verse. Under the guidance of renowned children’s literature writer and poet Xueye, editor-in-chief of Chinese Children’s Poetry, the young participants were encouraged to unleash their imaginations and transform their observationsof the lotus pond into poetic expressions.
The lotus pod becomes a palette, painting the lotus pond in vibrant colors, while it itself remains colorless, one young poet exclaimed. The lotus pod is a spotlight, illuminating the lotus flower’s concert, another added, their words brimming with playful imagery and insightful observation.
Xueye, impressed by the children’s poetic prowess, remarked, Their poems are not only vivid and imaginative, but also reveal a deep understanding and appreciation for the beauty of nature. They are brimming with creativity and a pure, innocent spirit, each line radiating a unique brilliance.
The study campwas just one component of the larger 2024 Chinese Children’s Poetry Exchange Conference, which brought together experts and scholars from the field of children’s poetry education both within China and abroad. The conference aimed to explore the current state of children’s poetry education, share successful teaching methods, and inspire futuregenerations of poets.
A highlight of the conference was the launch of the Chinese Children’s Poetry anthology, a collection of outstanding works by 152 young poets from across the globe. The anthology, carefully curated by a panel of experts, features six gold award-winning poems, 21 silveraward-winning poems, and 25 bronze award-winning poems.
Children possess an innate ability to perceive the poetry in everyday life, Xueye emphasized. Nurturing this poetic sensibility within them allows them to develop a deeper appreciation for beauty, kindness, and love, shaping them into individuals of strongmoral character.
Ninghai, known as the Hometown of Chinese Poetry, boasts a rich cultural heritage steeped in traditional poetry. The county government has embarked on a cultural revitalization initiative, Why Ninghai, to explore the origins and future of the city’s unique cultural identity. This initiative aims to promote thespirit of reading ten thousand books, traveling ten thousand miles, and bringing happiness to ten thousand families, solidifying Ninghai’s reputation as a city where literature thrives.
Children’s poetry has emerged as a powerful force in Ninghai, with the establishment of the National Children’s Poetry Research Center in Liyang, attracting thousands of individuals each year to learn the art of writing poetry. The 2024 Chinese Children’s Poetry Exchange Conference served as a testament to the vibrant and growing community of young poets in Ninghai, a city where the seeds of poetry continue to blossom and flourish.
