Shanghai’s Zhangyuan Skylight Gallery Offers Immersive ShikumenExperience with Lotus Viewing and Cool Breeze
SHANGHAI, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) – An immersive Shikumen experience titled Lotus Viewing and Cool Breeze was launched on August 25th at Zhangyuan, known as the No. 1 Garden in the Sea, in the heart of Shanghai. The Skylight Gallery within Zhangyuan creates acool and refreshing street scene.
As the most typical and representative spatial element of Shikumen architecture, the 天井 (skylight) is a crucial component of Shanghai’s alleyway life. Due to the high density and narrowspacing of Shikumen buildings, large outdoor spaces are scarce. The 天井 effectively compensates for this deficiency, serving as a traditional courtyard in residential settings, adding a sense of openness to the compact and cramped spaces. This fusion ofEastern and Western elements in Shanghai’s architectural development reflects a practical approach while incorporating traditional architectural aesthetics.
The 天井 has become a breakthrough point for Zhangyuan’s innovative understanding of Haipai architecture and culture. The Skylight Gallery, themed Lotus Harmonizes with Zhangyuan, features a carefully curated exhibitionof 49 ink and wash lotus paintings by Song Wei, a renowned Shanghai painter and artist. These works, created over seven years, evoke a sense of coolness with their depiction of pink lotus blossoms and verdant waters.
Song Wei explained that these paintings were inspired by his observations of the lotus’s transformation duringsunrise and sunset over 21 months. By combining lotus with plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums, mountains, rocks, and exotic trees, the paintings showcase diverse perspectives and possess significant artistic value. Notably, the placement of these artworks harmonizes with the space, creating dynamic themed exhibition areas, transforming theurban setting into a serene pond of lotus beauty, attracting visitors seeking tranquility.
Through its interpretation of the 天井 spatial concept, Zhangyuan has reimagined classic urban scenes, not only showcasing its rich historical and cultural heritage but also providing a prime location for the public to experience the charm of Haipai culture. TheSkylight Gallery series will continue with further cultural events, complementing the Lotus Harmonizes with Zhangyuan exhibition, solidifying the thematic expression of Zhangyuan’s Skylight Gallery.
In recent years, Zhangyuan has consistently revitalized its commercial vitality and achieved sustainable development through architectural exploration, artisticdialogue, and historical and cultural preservation. At Zhangyuan, the century-old Haipai culture and classic trendy lifestyle are not just stories and information perceived by the mind and heart but tangible experiences that can be seen, tasted, and felt.
The Zhangyuan West District, which has debuted, strives to create a first store, first show, and first release effect, leveraging experiential and leading-edge fashion consumption to deepen the Haipai cultural theme and imbue Zhangyuan with new commercial functions and formats. Under the concept of culture empowering business, Zhangyuan will further present itself as an urban cultural salon tothe world, where traditional culture and modern fashion complement each other, people and the city develop harmoniously, and the present and future engage in a vibrant dialogue.
The Lotus Viewing and Cool Breeze experience at Zhangyuan’s Skylight Gallery offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history and cultureof Shanghai’s Shikumen architecture while enjoying the beauty of nature and art. This immersive experience is a testament to Zhangyuan’s commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage while embracing modern trends and fostering a vibrant urban environment.
