Northeast China: The Ballast Stone of China’s Food Security
Harbin, China – The vast plains of Northeast China, known asthe country’s granary, play a critical role in ensuring national food security. The three provinces and one autonomous region – Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, and Inner Mongolia – shoulder the responsibility of stabilizing grain production and supply, acting as the ballast stone for the nation’s foodsecurity.
For years, the region has prioritized grain production, striving to increase both yield and quality. This commitment has seen a rapid development of high-standard farmland, strengthened agricultural technology, and innovative farming methods, positioning the Northeast as aleader in modern agriculture.
Investing in High-Standard Farmland and Technological Advancement
In 2023 alone, Heilongjiang province invested heavily in constructing 14 million mu (approximately 9.3 million acres) of high-standard farmland, alongside the restoration and rehabilitation of 12,000 erosion gullies. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance soil protection and utilization, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the region’s agricultural production.
The North Da Hinggan Mountains Group, a major agricultural enterprise in Heilongjiang, has achieved a remarkable 99.7% mechanization rate in its agricultural operations. This technological advancement, combined with a 77.07% contribution from agricultural technological progress, has significantly boosted productivity and efficiency.
Focus on Innovation and Research
The region is also actively engaged inresearch and development, with a particular focus on improving crop yields. For example, the National Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Rice Breeding and Cultivation Technology in Liaoning, established by Shenyang Agricultural University, is dedicated to advancing research in rice genetics, breeding, and cultivation techniques.
The Technology Courtyard in the GoldenCorn Belt of Jilin province, a joint initiative of China Agricultural University and Jilin Agricultural University, has played a crucial role in promoting agricultural research and development. Young agricultural students have been actively involved in the Technology Courtyard, contributing to the development of high-yield and efficient technical guidelines for black soil protection.
Boosting Productivity and Enhancing Resilience
彰武 County in Liaoning province, which received funding for the first batch of national corn yield improvement projects in 2023, has achieved significant results. The project area has witnessed an average yield increase of 680 jin (approximately 425 kg) per mu, leading to a 64% improvement in average yield.
The Northeast region is also actively promoting the use of drones and other advanced agricultural technologies to enhance efficiency and precision in farming operations. This includes the use of drones for soil analysis, pest control, and crop monitoring, further contributing to sustainable andhigh-yield agricultural practices.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite these advancements, the region faces challenges such as aging farmers, declining rural populations, and the need for further investment in infrastructure and technology. However, the Northeast remains committed to its role as the ballast stone of China’s food security.
The region’s focus on innovation, research, and sustainable practices is crucial in ensuring the long-term stability and resilience of its agricultural production. By continuing to invest in high-standard farmland, technological advancements, and human capital, the Northeast can continue to play a vital role in feeding the nation and contributing toglobal food security.
