Japan Trade Promotion Organization Sees SERVE as Key to Boosting Japan-China Trade

BEIJING, August 25, 2024 – The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) has highlighted the significance of the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), also known asSERVE, as a crucial platform for enhancing trade and economic exchanges between Japan and China.

SERVE is a vital opportunity to foster trade and economicexchanges between Japan and China, stated Ayumu Kusaba, Deputy Director General of the JETRO Beijing Representative Office, in a recent interview with China News Service. We hope to leverage SERVE to further promote multifaceted exchanges between our two countriesin areas such as economy, culture, and beyond.

JETRO, a vital organization supporting Japanese businesses in their global expansion efforts, has consistently participated in SERVE since 2012, showcasing its presence through dedicated JETRO boothsand Japan Pavilions. Over the past 12 years, more than 150 Japanese companies have participated in the event.

For Japanese exhibitors, SERVE presents a valuable opportunity to introduce their diverse products and services to Chinese consumers, Kusaba explained. This platform contributes significantly to deepening economic exchangesand mutual understanding between Japan and China. We have consistently reaped substantial benefits from each participation.

Last year, JETRO established a Japan Pavilion themed around online-offline integration. Spanning 266 square meters, the pavilion showcased products from 34 companies, encompassing categories like food and beverages, beauty and health, household goods, and handicrafts. Simultaneously, a JETRO Japan Business Pavilion was launched on WeChat Mini Program, offering an online platform to showcase a wider range of products. Kusaba emphasized that SERVE and related Japanese participation have garnered significant attention and coverage from mainstream Japanese media outlets.

This year, over 50 Japanese companies and organizations are slated to participate in SERVE, marking a record high in terms of scale. Building upon the success of initiatives like the JETRO Japan Business Pavilion from last year, the organization plans to promote Japanese tourism and the 2025 World Expoin Osaka, Kansai.

JETRO is also planning to promote several Japanese restaurant chains, such as Sushiro, which recently opened its first Beijing outlet in Xidan Joy City, garnering considerable attention. Kusaba highlighted the strengths of Japan’s modern service industry, which prioritizes high-quality service deliveryfrom the consumer perspective. Many Japanese brands have successfully entered the Chinese market, and JETRO anticipates further expansion in the future.

Kusaba acknowledged the growing popularity of Chinese brands like Haidilao and Mixue Bingcheng among Japanese consumers. He emphasized that the food and beverage industry represents just one aspect of Japan-China service trade. He believes that both countries have immense potential for collaboration and exchange in various sectors, including the silver economy, tourism, and environmental protection. JETRO actively supports Chinese companies in expanding their operations to Japan, particularly in cutting-edge service sectors.

China is not only a crucial neighbor for Japanbut also a captivating and vast market, Kusaba stated. Numerous Japanese companies remain optimistic about the Chinese market and are eager to establish or expand their operations in China. We aim to leverage the expansive platform of SERVE to further propel multifaceted exchanges between Japan and China.
